Grinding noise

Hey there everyone, I have grinding noise that is coming from the front passenger wheel well. I took a few minutes to pull the wheel off today and think I have narrowed it down. It looks like the backing plate that is behind the rotor is rattling. It sounds loose but I can't figure out how it would be making a grinding noise. As such I looked around to other areas. The noise speeds up as the wheels spin faster and slower as it slows down. There are no wear marks on the rim. There is however rust on the rotor on the circumference of it (which I know is normal) and a few bits missing (on the circumference). I need to bring it in for an oil change this coming week but I figured I would try to determine the issue before getting bent over with them saying random things are wrong. I have just under 40k on the WK2. Thanks for the help everyone!

Re: Grinding noise

Did you ever figure out what the issue was?
Sounds like something very similar started happening to mine today. Completely silent at idle, but as soon as you start moving it starts grinding.

I believe its that backing plate but I will know for sure this week when I bring it in. What was it on your WK2 JeepGarage?

Re: Grinding noise

I have not brought it in for service yet. This just started yesterday, but I did speak to a service advisor and he mentioned it might be a rock stuck somewhere in the bakes.
I'm heading in there today so they can have a look.

I'll report back if I have any luck today.

Re: Grinding noise

I took it to the dealer this afternoon, and it was in fact a rock stuck in the backing plate. It took them a whole 10 seconds to diagnose it and less than 5 minutes to fix it. Did not even open a work order for me.
Apparently it's quite common here in Calgary because of the type of gravel they use for the roads in the winter (which has not been all cleaned up yet).
The rock was about an inch long and about half an inch wide.

Hopefully your issue is as easy a fix as mine was.

Re: Grinding noise

My bearing went out and then they saw that there was a ton of rust on some of the parts of the axle that shouldn't have rust so they also replaced that. Just happy I had the warranty to cover the cost.
