hard, rough downshifts to 2nd, 1st gear ???

Would love to get some opinions from you fellas on the following I've been experiencing:

2011 GC Limited 4X4 V8 with 1200 miles on it. This happens in Auto mode, but is more pronounced in Snow mode. When I'm coming to a stop I can really feel the Jeep downshifting to 2nd and then to 1st. It seems like I can literally feel the gears moving and it can be felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal.

As I said it's more noticeable in Snow mode than Auto and is also more noticeable when the Jeep is just started and not warmed up yet.

This rig is soooo smooth and quiet that these downshifts just stick out like a sore thumb. Anybody else experiencing this? Opinions? Trip to the dealer in my future?

Thanks.

Re: hard, rough downshifts to 2nd, 1st gear ???

Brakes are easier to fix than a transmission.. try not to engine brake anymore

IF you're just downshifting and letting only the engine slow you down, given the compression and size, there will be a noticeable "lug" if you're going from 2-1.. but if you must, apply brake pressure while downshifting to relieve pressure on the drivetrain.

I hear ya! I'm not doing the downshifting myself... I'm letting the jeep do it itself. When I'm slowing down with the brake on I can really feel it going into 2nd, then 1st. It's almost like a slip, thug, slip, thug.

Re: hard, rough downshifts to 2nd, 1st gear ???

I had the same issue and it started after they flashed the transmission module to take care of the TSB for shuddering. It would downshift really hard at 40MPH, I fought the urge to take it back to the dealer and after driving another 1800 miles (Approx) it suddenly smoothed out and no longer does it. Shifts like butter now. My only explanation is that it took longer then I thought it would to learn the shift patterns. The machanic said the same thing which is why I resisted taking it back in right away.

I sometimes get a "clunk" from the back when stopping in snow mode. Anyone else?

No problems at all in snow or any mode. Smooth as silk operation. 2,500 miles and handling as well as performing like a dream.

Ohhhhhh.. I think it could just be the torque converter's "normal operation"

Excellent, thanks for all the comments. I'll give it some more time / miles and report back. Bring on the snow!

Re: hard, rough downshifts to 2nd, 1st gear ???

Mine is definitely shifting ruff throughout the ranges. I noticed it shifting smoothly when I have disconnected the battery. Then after driving 30mins it returns to shifting ruff. I checked the transmission fluid and it seems really high to me.

Update: Finally checked the fluid level when it was ice cold. The level is way above the HOT symbol. Definitely way over filled from the factory. I can tell there is a QC problem with some of the lots simple items I have noticed not checked from the factory. Very disappointing now days for a new vehicle. Other than that I love the car.

I am taking mine in Monday morning for the dealer to take a look at.
I've noticed many are reporting that it seems to smooth out with time, suggesting that any 'learning period' may be longer than you'd expect, for whatever reason.

If true, by disconnecting the battery you are reseting the learning curve and essentially 'starting over' every time. Jus' a thought.

I went that route with 4,000miles on that clock still not any better. Disconnected the battery to swap steering wheels and noticed the shifting dramatically improved. Then when it went back to ruff shifts I figured it had to be something else. The fluid level is definitely high as even cold it is 2 inches above the HOT section. Once the dealer drains the excess tomorrow I will report if that has fixed my problem.

Re: hard, rough downshifts to 2nd, 1st gear ???

Got the car back from the dealer. Another let down of the american auto shop. Of course they said they couldn't duplicate the transmission problem. I then asked if they checked the transmission fluid level cold. They stated that the car had to warm up first to check the level since the fluid doesn't drain down into the pain when cold......I really wonder why COLD is written on the dipstick then??? I will remove the excess fluid myself tonight, it isn't worth my time to argue.

They also aligned the front end due to the tow being off and causing my tires to feather from the get go.......of course when I get it back the steering wheel isn't straight. I tend to wonder if that is common in this town, because I have yet to get a car back after an alignment that the wheel isn't off center.

Above all that they went through the trouble to put down a paper matt, but the mechanic still managed to cover the inside with dirt and mud. It is sad that people get as lazy as they do and take no pride in their work these days.

Sorry for the rant.
