Has anybody removed their Headliner?

Has anybody removed their headliner or know if there's a how too somewhere? I've searched and can't find anything. I have rattles in my roof, AGAIN! Yes, again, so annoyed. Taking it to the dealer but last time they fixed the rattle, they broke the seat belt. If rattles are to reoccur, then I'd rather fix it myself then let the 'part fitters or brakers' touch my Jeep. Any help would be much appreciated.

And it's posts like this that have me living with my rattle and hesitant to have the dealer start aimlessly looking for something. I too would love to see a "how to" on removing the headliner and looking for rattles myself, if one exists.

Re: Has anybody removed their Headliner?

Highly not recommended due to the side curtain airbags. Leave it to your dealer or find another dealer.

Re: Has anybody removed their Headliner?

I had an annoying rattle right behind the driver side head rest. So I decided to drop the headliner and do some sound deadning while fixing the rattle. Let me tell you that this was no easy task. You basically have to start from the bottom and work your way up. I pretty much had every plastic trim piece removed inluding the rubber door seals and spare tire. I was unable to get the A-pillar trim removed so that left me just dropping the headliner without completely removing it as there were some wires going to the center consule that I could not get unconnected behind the driver side A-pillar. My rattle ended up coming from the wire harness that goes to the rear seat grab handle/light. During prduction, these get installed after the headliner is in placed so the wiring is long enough to let the handle dangle till it is bolted in. When installed the wire gets pushed back into the empty space above the headliner. It just so happens that right in this spot there is a 4"x8" piece of thin wood glued to the top of the headliner where my wire was just resting on thus making a very annoying rattle. I rerouted the wire and also put some raamadio self advesive ensolite up there and now no more rattle. After I doing all this I probably could have easily fixed this by just removing the grab handle and maybe the seal and a few panlels around the rear door. I also noticed that ther are velcro pieces around the front of the sun roof opening that weren't pressed together all the firmley so you may want to look there too. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Re: Has anybody removed their Headliner?

The headliner connector strips are not velcro. Velcro is fabric based and light duty fastening. The GC uses 3M Dual-Lock fastening material:

http://www.3m.com/product/informatio...er.htmlhttp://

Dual-Lock is plastic, and takes a lot of effort to pull apart once it is fastened properly. The problem with some GC's (including mine) is that wiring in the roof gets in the way of the dual-locks. I have wiring that I moved for two dual-locks, then snapped it together and my rattle issue has been fixed ever since. I did also find a long tail on a tie-wrap holding a wire in place directly above the driver's head. The tail made a tapping noise when the sunroof was open. The noise went away after I cut the tail off.

If you want to see what is involved in removing the headliner, see the PDF file on this page: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_interior_trim.htm

Re: Has anybody removed their Headliner?

Yeah, right. And a service tech's gonna get that all ripped apart and back together with no "leftover" parts?

Guess I'm gonna just continue to turn up the radio. Mine's not a "fastener" issue. It seems to be coming from the panoroof "track" above the passengers rear door. If I sit back there and exert pressure (pulling the track apart - up and down in opposite directions), I can get the rattle to stop. Also, if I open the sunroof (with the sunshade all the way back open) and stop at a certain point, and then bring the sunshade forward to just where the back of the sunroof is, it also seems to exert enough pressure in this one spot to eliminate the "rattle" about 97%.

Guess I'll keep playing with it.

Re: Has anybody removed their Headliner?

I've noted that above 35 mph withe the sun screen closed, if a back window opens it will make the sun screen vibrate loudly. If this is the norm, Jeep needs to rethink this design.

Re: Has anybody removed their Headliner?

It is normal, and described as such in the owners manual (page 45). The buffeting phenomonen is not unique to the GC, it is quite common. It even happens in BMW's and Mercedes...
