Headlights causing Jeep to go crazy??

Hi everybody, I'm from Belize and just bought my first new to me Grand Cherokee. I only have it for a few weeks but so far I love it. Unfortunately I have come across a weird problem. A little history on the vehicle..It was bought used from the states and driven 3500+ miles to get here. It made the trip with no issues.

After getting the vehicle here it was sent straight to the body shop for repairs to the rear of the vehicle. After getting it back I noticed the passenger headlight was not working. I drove it like that one night and had no issues.

Now tonight I took a drive and on my way back I had almost all warning lights come on the dash, like service 4wd, traction control light, fcw off, the Lightning bolt symbol, check engine, tpms, service steering, and many more.. Rpm and speedo stoped working, wipers came on by itself, signal lights wouldn't work, ac stopped blowing cold, oil pressure and temp warning... It was crazy.

After getting it home I was looking around and found a thin ground strap was not connected. It was dark so I didn't fasten it. I disconnected the battery for a while and when I reconnected and turned the vehicle on the same thing started to happen. I had the lights on auto and when I turned them off the jeep starts functioning properly again. It's weird.. The gauges start to work and the warning light slowly start to go away leaving just the check engine light on. Do you think the headlight that I have out is causing this? When I turn on the headlights I can see a rpm drop.

Tomorrow I plan to get it scanned. If anyone has and info for me I would greatly appreciate it. The dealer here sucks and it's just me and my mechanic buddy that have to do all the diagnosing. And no parts here either everything must be ordered from the states..

Thanks!

Re: Headlights causing Jeep to go crazy??

So I tried to get it scanned today but could not. The scanner could only go to 2010.

My mechanic said looks like a bad ground. So I will have to check that out. When I drove it to him I did so with no problems. As soon as I turn the headlight on it will start to go crazy.

Are the ballasts for these Jeeps known to give trouble?

A loose ground can cause all sorts of problems, but I don't know if your headlight is being caused by this. This recall is for the '14 GC, but it has some good ground strap info.

Thanks for the info!! If you look at that picture right behind the ground that they are mentioning to tighten there is another thin ground strap. Well on mine its attached to the frame but the other end is just hanging. Any ideas on where that should attach to? Look like it goes on the alternator??

Re: Headlights causing Jeep to go crazy??

Figured out the problem. The passenger side headlight was leaking and water was coming out of one harness on the bottom the headlight. Also all the modules on the headlight were wet.

I unplugged and started the vehicle without the headlight connected and with the light switch on all is normal again. Still have a check engine light but will have to figure that one out later.

Anyone have any leads on a replacement passenger projector headlight..

Do you just want the circuit boards? I have a busted headlight over here in Western Australia... I believe all the boards are still functional.

Cheers,
Steve
