Re: Headlights too bright?

I have pretty much the same oem HID lamps in my Durango. You do need to aim them down a tad even with the self leveling!

Yes, on startup the lights go up and down. The headlights auto-level to two heights (angles), one for normal ride height and one for aero/sport modes. This too low in aero/sport mode is consistent and always does it. One would think the Quadra-Lift sensors would provide feedback to keep the headlight angle consistent, independent of ride height mode. Did you get your issue resolved? If yes, what is the solution?
Checking back to see if anyone discovered a solution?

Re: Headlights too bright?

Mine aims high only rarely, and resets once turned off. As I never use off road height settings in town or from month to month, it is not an issue - that's when I'd get it aiming way high. I never adjusted the headlights down manually.

Re: Headlights too bright?

WK2 HID headlights too high / low resolved and fixed - The dealer service manager and tech tried to convince me everything was working normal, but did perform an Air Suspension Computer Module (ASCM) TSB 08-034-12 Flash since it was available. Flash was released 5/10/12 which was after I took posession of my WK2 in March. After the TSB Flash, my headlights were now too low in both normal and aero/sport modes - gee, thanks guys! I verified that the tech did not turn the adjustment screws - so the air suspension vehicle cant angle must have changed! I raised both headlights myself and compared the two modes. I'm glad to report that both modes illuminate nearly an identical swath of road. The normal mode is a short distance further due to the higher vehicle height, but not vastly different as was the case prior to the flash. Afterwards thinking about the root cause, the Quadra-Lift appears to be the culprit with varying front to back cant angles between the two modes. I never got around to measuring the difference, but that would have been my next step in attempting to resolve. I was sceptical that this TSB Flash would work since it didn't specifically mention this symptom, but then again, not all minor bugs are identified in sw revisions. I'm pleasantly surprised and happy!

Re: Headlights too bright?

Same problem with my 2011 GC Overland. The first time I had the shop look at it they found there was an update from Chrysler to change the set point in the computer. That helped quite a bit. I had it back in the shop again today after being flashed frequently and road raged twice (once was by a dump truck I was following). They told me there is no way they can adjust the setting or aim the lights lower so they started a case with Chrysler.

I can tell the lights are pointing too high by where the beams hit the trees alongside the road. I guess I'll just wait for them to figure it out.

Re: Headlights too bright?

After reading the post above mine which I hadn't noticed I went out and found that there are adjustment screws. What's wrong with just tipping the beams down and why couldn't they do that at the Jeep shop? I was able to turn both lights downward. Just like in the old days. I wonder if doing so screwed something up?

Re: Headlights too bright?

Don't worry, you didn't screw anything up. By turning that adjustment screw you are merely adjusting the "mechanical" reference point. The computer adjusts everything from that point. Which flash tsb did they perform on yours?

Re: Headlights too bright?

I don't know what TSB they did. I just looked over the service invoice from back in April when they did it and it says they were "Unable to change head lamp level. Performed recalibration of headlamps."

So am I understanding this right? Even though I tilted the beams downward with the screws and liked what it did, the computer is going to adjust the beams from that point and aim them back up too high anyway?

Thanks for your reply and help. This Jeep is at once the nicest rig I have ever owned and the biggest hassle. So far it has had the throttle body, the main computer and the suspension compressor replaced, and been in twice for the headlights. I also have a NAV system that loses its memory and they tell me there is no cure for that. It has been out of service for 10 days in 8000 miles. Not what you would expect from so costly a rig. The only help I get from Chrysler is to have them point out that it does not meet the Lemon Law criteria. But it is running fine now and I just need to get it so I can drive after dark without being attacked by dump trucks.

Re: Headlights too bright?

No, the mechanical reference point you set is the starting point where the computer makes its adjustments. If you want your lights lower like you did, turn the screws to the height you like - the computer will then compensate for vehicle height movements from that point as you drive. Sounds like you are good to go with the lights.

Search these forums for RHR 2.169 update which will fix your NAV issue. The release is an intermediate release that you or a buddy must do yourself till Chrysler officially releases.

wtf? what kind of hillbilly explanation is that, "paint caused them to be brighter"..

I'm assuming the officer was being a smarta## seeing that his light housings were painted red(which is not oem) which then made him feel the headlights were most likely modified as well.
