Question HELP...Liftgate will not CLOSE/LATCH!

Hello JG,

I am in need of some semi-urgent assistance. Was detailing the Jeep for a couple hours, and had the liftgate open for 20-30 minutes while I did all door jams and engine bay. Went to close it and nothing...tried it from the overhead button, rear button and key fob. Nothing.

So I "closed" it manually and it will not latch/secure the tailgate. Tried to put it in reverse, then drive, then park and open/close...and it just stays open!

Thoughts?

Since it is opening, and the rear cargo lights illuminate and the dash notification shows it in red as open, I do not think it is a fuse issue. Am I wrong?

The next step is doing a (-) battery terminal reset? If I do this, should I leave the tailgate in the open position since that is what still functions? Or the "closed" way with the latch not engaged?

Any help is greatly appreciated...it is going into the dealer this week, but I am more worried about being able to lock the rear...and my full LED interior stays on for 15-20 mins (didn't time it...but seemed longer than usual)

Re: HELP...Liftgate will not CLOSE/LATCH!

It's possible you closed the gate latch while you were wiping down the gate painted areas.
I went out to my Jeep to duplicate what I think your problem might be. I've done it plenty of times myself. I moved the curved arm inside the latch (mounted on the gate) with my fingers and was able to close and lock the gate with very little effort (with the gate open). It would not engage the striker because the latch was already in the closed position. Fortunately for me I only had to raise the gate handle to disengage the latch. finished. Yours may need some gentle persuasion. If it is gummed up or has tighter tolerances than mine, (or if you've already slammed it a few times with the latch in the closed position you may have jammed it) you may need to move the little arm with a screwdriver at the same time you lift the latch. You will be able to then see where the striker fits up into the latch and then the little arm comes around the striker to latch the two together. If you get the latch unlatched it should latch. Good luck.

Thank you for the detailed response and trying to replicate the problem...what I think happened was I had the tailgate open too long, and the car went into "sleep" mode and completely did not "know" the tailgate was open nor would allow it to close with any of the 3 ways (overhead, rear button and key fob)...also tried the liftgate handle/push-button while it was stuck open and nothing.

I finally said screw it and closed it with some force once I had it within 6 inches of the latch...a little extra and it closed/latched. So at least it is latched-shut right now. I am taking it into the dealer tomorrow (for other reasons) so this will be added to the list. I think it is k" now, but I have not opened it up since last night (my thought was I know it will open, but don't know if it will close). Will try at the dealer tomorrow...

SOOO if anyone has this problem arise, manually close the liftgate to about 6" from the latch then close with medium force. That will at least close it so the interior lights do not stay on and the dash display telling you it is open.

Thanks again for the assistance!!

Re: HELP...Liftgate will not CLOSE/LATCH!

Yeah, the gate can also be operated manually and when closing manually it won't electrically suck itself shut the rest of the way. You have to do all the work.
If you notice it is about to raise into something you can stop it by grabbing it and it will try to close. Stop it from lowering so you can keep it open and at least use it at that less than fully open position and it will switch off and go into manual only mode. It won't shut by any of the electrical options and you will have to manually shut it then also.

Diagnostic: "Open in circuit Q901"; then repaired said circuit.

That is all the detail on the paperwork
