Here we go.... Dash noise = Pop

After reading lots of threads about our Jeeps, i kept reading some threads about noises, and everybody seems to have a different noise, somewhere.

Well, I kept thinking that i must be lucky and haven't experienced any of those weird noises. Guess what?!? Since last week, every now and then i hear this loud POP noise from somewhere, i guess top of dash, maybe behing the cluster... I can't pin point the exact location because it is so quick and random(usually it happens once a day) and of course, I'm driving when this happens.

At first, i thought, could it be because the interior is hot, and by turning the AC on maybe the plastics are reacting to the temperature change? I notice this usually happens when the car is sitting outside on temperatures around 85F. I'm going to start logging when it happens and maybe get a camera recording and maybe show the dealer if it starts to get worse.

IDK, please input your opinions and thoughts. Thanks.

Re: Here we go.... Dash noise = Pop

just noticed the same thing on mine couple of days ago

I was trying to locate the sound, it seems coming from around the center of the dash.
Decide to make more investigation in this regard before going to the dealer

Re: Here we go.... Dash noise = Pop

What model year / trim Jeep?

I occasionally get a loud pop/crack sound on my 2013 Laredo X. It has been loud enough that passengers have asked, "What was that?". It comes from the center stack. It almost sounds like someone twisting an ice tray to break the ice cubes loose.

My opinion at this point is that it is something expanding/contracting (HVAC controls) from the different temperature extremes of the vehicle warming up or cooling down from extreme cold/hot.

I don't know that I heard it this past winter, but I expect to hear it again this summer once the temperatures start going up.

Re: Here we go.... Dash noise = Pop

I drive through a tunnel every day going to work and at least once, sometimes twice, while driving through the tunnel, I get a series of loud pops...

The first time I heard it, it was so loud and jarring that I thought I had run over something that had shattered and got pulled up into the engine.

After a few experiences with it, Ive determined its coming from the speakers.

I guess I've gotten used to it since I dont react to it very much at this point, but it seems to be related to the radio and something in there is causing it to happen.

When in complete paranoia mode, I start thinking that the radio may be picking up some type of monitoring system that they are using... license plate reader, etc...

Thumbs down Re: Here we go.... Dash noise = Pop

I have a '14 Laredo E with RA2 . At first, the noise sound from dead center top dash(last time it happened it sound like top dash behind cluster, looking up from the start button), and it seems to happen on hot days, while the AC is starting to cool down the cabin.

That was a great way to describe the noise -like breaking loose ice cubes from an ice tray- Sometimes it is LOUD.

From what i saw on top of dash, there is the top dash vents trim part and maybe there seems to be a center plastic cover, where i believe the top of line models house the 3.5" dash speaker.

Now we need to find out if the higher models with the dash speaker or the leather covered dash, are experiencing the same noise.

Did anyone figure out the load popping noise, I have 2015 GC Altitude that has done this off and on today being the loudest. It was about 80 degree out and I turned on AC after a few minutes of it popped really loud . This time it sounded like it was from rear door area maybe speaker.

2014 summit. No noise like you guys are describing at all... 80 degrees today and getting in the vehicle in 15 mins. Will advise however I've gone thru two summers with it and never a noise like that.

My GC, with 31,000 miles did it a lot at first and it is ONLY with the radio on AM!! It still does but not as much and very randomly. Service manager told me the AM radio is junk?! I have just put up with it. Dave

2014 Summit. I have the occasional pop also coming from the dash. Didn't notice it as much in the summer, but now in December it happens once or twice a week.

Re: Here we go.... Dash noise = Pop

Funny I was just searching for this but relating to the actuator/blend door. I'm having the same noise pretty much every drive I go on with my 2011 Limited.

My initial thought was a bad one, that it is the air door actuator causing this noise by stressing the plastic gear on itself which meshes with the blend door gear, or the actuator is flexing under high stress and causing a pop somewhere. Eventually something is going to break, and it won't be an easy fix... I just fixed my broken actuator gear a few weeks ago and it was awful.

But part of me thinks maybe that isn't the issue. I've been having it happen while driving when the heat is already going just fine - the air door actuator and gear shouldn't be moving much at that point. If anything, they'd be creating a blend of cool/hot air at that point, instead of just straight hot. The popping sound should only occur when the door hits its travel limit, causing the actuator and gears to stress slightly. The HVAC auto-calibration is supposed to find this limit and remember it, so it knows the system is working properly and probably so it doesn't break the damn door/gears/actuator motor.

I'm hoping it's something else that is popping. I don't give a damn what it is, as long as it's not the actuator/gears/blend door. But I do have to mention, that when my gear was broken and waiting to be fixed, I do NOT remember getting this noise at all which makes me think it is the actuator/gears/blend door. It would also explain why so many people have had broken gears and had to fix it to get their HVAC working properly again...
