HID flicker

I've had my 2011 Laredo X for a little over a year. The HID's were already installed before I purchased it. I have not had any issues with them until now. The right one is flickering. It doesn't turn completely off but goes pretty dim and does it fast. I can tell people in front of me wonder what's going on. Is this the sign of a bad bulb? I've looked at all the connections and can't see anything loose. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Re: HID flicker

Could be a bad bulb, could be a bad ballast. If it is the ballast, it may kill the bulb (or reduce its life) but doing that dimming/flickering. I would replace the HIDs with a quality kit that you know of or like, or better yet, get rid of them and use the traditional halogen bulbs.

Re: HID flicker

Sounds like it's a low quality HID kit. Not uncommon as cheaper kits are terrible. If that's not the case I have also seen this kind of thing happen where an HID kit was installed without a harness and plugged right into the original wiring which isn't enough for an HID kit. Some vehicles require an aftermarket wire harness with beefier wires. Pre-made harnesses are available on sites like the retrofit source . com.

Re: HID flicker

I was able to find out the brand of the HID lights. Made by Race Sport. I emailed them telling them of the issue and sent some pics of the ballast and the bulbs. I'm a newbie with this stuff and I really don't want to start from scratch and install a whole new HID kit. I'll keep you guys posted. My plan is to replace the bulbs and see if that resolves the issue and if that doesn't, I'll go with new ballast.

Update: I switched out the bulbs from side to side. I couldn't get the right one to light up. Same thing when I switched out the ballast from side to side. I had to make a run to the store. I used the fog lights due to one headlight being out and me not wanting to get a ticket. When I got home, both lights came on but the flicker still existed. I've checked the connections. Everything was fine. Back to the drawing bored.

Re: HID flicker

So I'm a moron. I'll admit it. The part I thought was the ballast that I switched out was actually the capacitor. I just now located the ballasts and switched them out and sure enough, the problem followed the ballast. Looks like I'll be ordering a new one. Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I knew nothing about HID lights until I had this problem. I love this forum! I learned a lot about my lights. Thanks again guys!

Re: HID flicker

Capacitor? I thought an HID kit consisted of a bulb, ballast, and igniter (if it's not built into the ballast).

Re: HID flicker

They were the anti flicker relays. Not sure what to call them.
