High Mileage Wk2

I purchased my 2014 Laredo 4x4 in November of 2014 with 14,000 miles on it for $27k. Not a bad deal in my eyes. The issue I have here is that it's now 8/31/2015 and have 42,000 miles on the vehicle. Work pays me $400 / mo plug mileage for gas but I cover 5 states. Given my math the vehicle will have about 220,000 miles when it's paid off. The vehicle is maintained and garaged kept. I also have the max care warranty. I'm thinking it would make more sense to keep it and run it to the ground. OR would it be worth checking with a dealer at about 100,000 miles to see if I could trade it in and keep my payment the same (426/mo). Just looking for opinions on what you would do. Thank you.

Re: High Mileage Wk2

The magic number to trade in a vehicle BEFORE reaching is 100K. After that, the value dives by something around another 30-40% from my experience.

IMHO, I would keep it as pristine as possible and trade it in around 85-90K. It may be the game you have to play if you want to drive a vehicle like this for work. Personally, I'd get a TD Jetta for the work stuff ( +/- 55mpg).

Just my $.02.

Re: High Mileage Wk2

I own a portion of a trucking company (not semis) so I deal with this a lot.

The first thing you must do is understand that 72 or 84 month financing is not for you. Otherwise you'll have an old worn out vehicle that's still not payed off. I typically finance my trucks at 48 months. That way they are payed off at about 150k mi and go another 50k before needing replaced. Albeit they are F350 Super Duty.

Overlanding is correct. MAX loan term should be 60 months as with this term, you are ahead of the value after about 18-24 months of use assuming no excess mileage per year of vehicle (10K-12K typ. assumed). A 72 month term requires about half the term before you hit break-even status on the loan amount.
