Re: High-Pitched Tuning Fork Noise

I am going to rest on it a bit as well. I think I've taken it as far as I can. As a side note, my sound is a occasionally louder than "normal"... that's the only time it annoys me. I can hear it with Fans on 5 and Recirculate running. Radio drowns it out though. I wish I didn't have to rest on it and they'd come up with a solution. I wish I knew where the air from the steering assist is being expelled, maybe I could make a damper for it, but I have no idea where that is.

Re: High-Pitched Tuning Fork Noise

I noticed this exact same problem today, a high pitch tone. I was driving on level ground going straight and was hearing it when I was just touching the accelerator at about 50 MPH. At first I thought it was the radio, but I turned it and everything else off and was still hearing the sound. I stopped at the next set of lights and haven't heard it since.

I guess Jeep created a whistle when they built the release valve.

Cross linking another thread on same topic where another member posted a work-around fix his service guy came up with - adding rubber to mounting bracket of power steering pump...

Re: High-Pitched Tuning Fork Noise

I appreciate the cross-post but I don't think this is the same problem, or is it? I really can't tell.

High pitch noise related to steering, seems too close to be different issue. Member hamlet064 even mentions tuning fork sound in post where he uploaded the picture.

Re: High-Pitched Tuning Fork Noise

He seems to indicate that its constant (always there) when idling. That's not the case at all for me - mine is only when turning and not all the time. That's a major difference. Also, it's not coming from my steering column. It's passed that, inside the engine compartment. I wish he could confirm the symptoms a bit clearer and let us know if the sound in the video is the same one or not. The service tech's saying it's a pressure release sounds way more plausible to me (in my case - I am glad he found a cure to his issue). BTW, I would LOVE to be wrong and a piece of rubber will help the issue.

Can anyone tell what's going on in his pictures? I don't see the padding he's talking about.

I have a very similar issue to yours. Most noticeable in QT settings other than auto. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow. Have you figured out the issue?

Re: High-Pitched Tuning Fork Noise

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but for what it's worth we've been dealing with this issue for a while now. We are on our second power steering pump, and the noise is back. It did go away for a while (after they replaced it), but returned after about 800 miles. Interestingly enough, I noticed that there was almost no power steering fluid in the reservoir not too long ago.... Went back to dealer, thinking perhaps the real issue was now discovered. Dealer acknowledged the lack of fluid (was alarmed by it) and claimed it was an air bubble in the system. Removed the bubble, topped off the fluid, and claimed that the whistle was once again resolved along with it. It wasn't. Still there... so we may be heading for pump #3 at some point. Or living with it... doesn't really cause issues with driving, it's just annoying, as you guys that hear/have it know.
