Hill Decent control

How do I use this while not in "Rock" mode? My Raptor all I had to do was slow below 20mph and then push the button, this I can't get it to engage while not in "Rock" mode. I though I read this was available in 4HI and 4LO?

Re: Hill Decent control

Found this in the owners manual.

9. Hill Descent Control Indicator Light — If Equipped
The symbol indicates the status of the Hill
Decent Control (HDC) feature. The lamp will
be on solid when HDC is armed. HDC can only
be armed when the transfer case is in the “4WD
Low” position and the vehicle speed is less then 30 mph
(48 km/h). If these conditions are not met while attempting
to use the HDC feature, the HDC indicator lamp will
flash on/off.

Re: Hill Decent control

Bummer, I could have sworn the DVD said both 4HI and 4LO operation was possible. Oh well, the times I would really need it would be in 4LO situations anyways since the speed can't be that great.

Thanks, your reply answered my questions.

Re: Hill Decent control

I will check my DVD and paper manual. This info is from the Jeep on-line source and I have found discrepancies before.

Re: Hill Decent control

Just found this. Looks like more what you were thinking.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) — Four-Wheel Drive
Models With MP3023 Two-Speed Transfer Case
Only
HDC maintains vehicle speed while descending hills
during off-road driving situations and is available in
4WD HIGH range and 4WD LOW range. To enable HDC,
press the HDC switch or put the Selec-Terrain™ system
in “ROCK” mode (“ROCK” mode is only available in
4WD LOW range).
When HDC is enabled, the HDC icon will be illuminated
in the instrument cluster. HDC will automatically apply
the brakes to control downhill speed to the selected level
when necessary on grades greater than approximately
8%. It will usually not activate on level ground.

Re: Hill Decent control

I haven't tried it on that steep of a grade in 4HI, so maybe it will go in!

Even though the owners manual refers to HDC in 4wd high range, HDC does not work in high range. Not sure why it has not been corrected.

Re: Hill Decent control

The 4th edition of the Owner's Manual has been fixed:

Hill Descent Control (HDC) — Four-Wheel Drive
Models With MP3023 Two-Speed Transfer Case Only
HDC maintains vehicle speed while descending hills during off-road driving situations and is available in 4WD LOW range only. To enable HDC, press the HDC switch or put the Selec-Terrain™ system in "ROCK" mode ("ROCK" mode is only available in 4WD LOW range).

Re: Hill Decent control

That's crap.

I was infuriated last week trying to go down a steep icy hill and the hill decent control would do nothing but blink at me - despite the manual telling me it should work in high range. There should be no reason you need to be in low range for it. There are hoards of suv's that don't even have low range but have hdc.

Re: Hill Decent control

Somehow I'm thinking the HDC isn't appropriate for descending an icy hill. As I understand HDC it requires a level of traction to work correctly that you don't have in an icy situation but I could be wrong.

Re: Hill Decent control

To me, if I'm going to go down a steep hill and speed is a concern I'm going to be in 4-low anyway. Let the gearing do some of the work and not just the brakes. Very fast to go in and out of 4-low.

Re: Hill Decent control

Yes, hill decent and ice would not be a good thing......talk about loss of control!
