Hood Damaged While Shipping Jeep

Hi guys, first post here, love this forum! Just got a nice used 2014 WK2 Overland but while being shipped to me it looks like something bashed into the hood and it's now dented and has a crack.

I don't know if a repair is the best way to go or just get a new one and have it painted to match? The shipping company is going to cover it at least, I'm just not sure the best way to go about fixing it. I don't want to have it repaired only to have it look bad down the road.

Re: Hood Damaged While Shipping Jeep

Hood is aluminum and aluminum is difficult to repair over steel...it's too soft but a good body shop with the correct aluminum body tools will have no problem. They are all tooling up for aluminum body panels as it is the "new" metal.

Your issue is going to be matching the paint so you can't tell the hood has been painted. Very tough in the field especially with metallic paint, that's Granite Crystal, right?

Yea that's what I figured. Paint color is the Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl.

I think going with a new hood may be the better way as at least the whole thing will look right color wise, and hopefully they can match the Mopar color.

Still metallic but being darker the shade diffs wont show. They would spray the whole hood if they repaired it, which they will. The color is not the issue. The problem is the metal flakes within and the thickness of the layer put down combined with the sprayer used. It all makes it real tough to tell the panel wasn't repainted. I am quite hopeful knowing its the black that you wont notice difference.

They replaced my fender well trims since they wouldnt stay adhered and they are now a darker Deep Cherry Red Crystal than the fenders. Looks like lipstick, really.

Again, the balck really really helps not show this difference. Make absolutely sure that you only take delivery of the finished product on a sunny day outdoors. No indoor delivery nor cloudy day. Trust me, its the only way to evaluate the paint job for matching.

Oh ya and they may just replace the hood if the time/material to repair is less than/close to a new one.

Don't know how far back they started making the hoods aluminum but it's pretty standard practice in the industry. Look at the new F150. Aluminum, composites and other "exotics" are on the upswing and steel use is on the decline.

You fart on the leading edge of my hood and it dents. I have dents from rock salt. Steel wouldn't do that. But then again, my '02 Limited JGC's steel hood took the salt and rocks like a man but rusted like a beotch!

The hood aluminum material is so thin it's crazy. I wish it was the same as my '07 Wrangler. METAL.

Did a magnet test on the hoods of my '11 Overland and my '10 Ford Sport Trac. Both are non-ferrous, so looks like at least back to 2011 on Grand Cherokees and 2010 on Ford SUVs.
BTW, the entire bed except the tailgate on the Sport Trac is a composite of some kind.

I only ask because the hood on my 13 is rust bubbling from underneath where the skin is folded over the shell. The seam sealer is all bubbling off as well.
I'm going to check it today with a magnet.

Any good paint shop can match the paint, but they would typically just paint the entire hood to avoid match problems.
They won't be the cheap paint shops.... and it might even be cheaper to replace the hood, but the new ones tend to arrive in primer.

If you are on good terms with your dealer, ask them where they get their work done.
Also ask OTHER dealers in the area--they often refer to the same company.

It's defenatly aluminum. I'm still waiting on the dealers call about what they are going to do.

Re: Hood Damaged While Shipping Jeep

All the JGC hoods are aluminum since 2011. I hate it. Acorns falling from trees have dented mine. I always have to be aware of where I park. If they make a steel aftermarket one then go for that and say goodbye to dents.
