Angry Horrible grinding noise.

Well this morning did not start off so well. I was on my way to work when I stopped at a stop light, when I started to go again I heard a bad grinding noise (loud and constant). I stopped to look to see if I could quickly see anything (metal or anything out of place) and did not see anything out of the ordinary. I was luckily about a block away from work so I just drove to the parking lot. The noise only occurs when the car is moving, even slightly, and stops when I stop. My stopping power feels the same, no shaking or shuddering. I know I will be brining it in to the dealer in the morning, but seeing if anyone has any clue what it could be or if anyone experienced this before. I believe the location is the front drivers side wheel area (possibly the brake region).

Cliffs: Bad noise from front drivers side, no known contact or do not believe I hit anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Horrible grinding noise.

My guess is that a clip that holds the brake pads in place snapped off and is making contact with the inside of the wheel or the brake rotor.

Thanks! I went back outside again to test it out. It only makes the noise when moving forward not in reverse, and using the brake does not cause the noise to start/stop.

Take that wheel of and see what's stuck in there.

Re: Horrible grinding noise.

Well as luck would have it, no issues today with said noise. I left my car at work overnight as it is closer to the dealer than my house. I start it up move forward and nothing, no grinding, just the smooth quiet sound I am used to. I still take it in just to be sure and they check it out and nothing is loose or missing. Will chop this up to some debris that positioned the caliber to rub possibly the rotor in a way to only make contact moving forward not in reverse. Glad it wasn’t something very serious.

Hope your issue is easy like mine slyfox.

I had a weird noise the other day. I wouldn't say mine was horrible but, I was driving along and heard a faint grinding noise(ithink from the wheel area). Stopped, looked around the jeep. Did t find anything. Continued on my way and haven't heard it since. I am kinda worried abo it since we are going on a trip in 2 weeks and I don't want any car troubles with my 3200 mile jeep.. But if it's not doing anything I can't really have the dealer look at it....

Don't drink while you are driving. You might spill your beer.

Re: Horrible grinding noise.

Just experience this issue this morning on the way into work (grinding noise, not the drinking!). Called the dealer for an appointment for Thursday. Hopefully the noise goes away, but will have the dealer check regardless...it is not normal as the last car I had with this noise was a '77 Plymouth Volare that was falling apart. From the responses, it may be more than just dirt in the calipers.

I will update when I know more.

Re: Horrible grinding noise.

Update: I drove back from work this past Tuesday and within a couple thousand feet at low speed the noise stopped. It was definitely a grinding noise that was speed dependent, definitely coming from the brakes.

Flash forward to today:

I got back from the service department this morning (Flemington Jeep in NJ has a great service department FWIW), and the mechanic showed me two areas on the left front rotor that were scraped. He said it was very minor and was caused by something trapped between what appeared to be a caliper shield and the brake rotor. He said a small rock or other debris most likely got caught temporarily and that all looked good.

Overall I am very happy at the outcome and that there was nothing seriously wrong. Hopefully the brake design is not problematic where it will be common for pebbles and debris to get caught....
