Re: How to defog windshield when A/C doesn't work..

You are getting plenty of air blowing though the defroster vents right?

When our AC compressor went on our WJ, it would still defrost just fine. Hot weather was the problem.

A very small leak will probably not make the carpet wet, but will be enough to fog windows. You may or may not smell the antifreeze. You may or may not notice any changes in the coolant level.

I think you could try a bit of pepper or stop leak in the coolant to see if that will stop the leak temporarily, perhaps long enough to isolate the issue to the heater core.

Otherwise a radiator shop can do a pressure test, which involves removing the core, putting it under water and fill it full of air similar to checking for a tire leak. Since its a PITA to get at the WJ heater core (I think you have to take the heater housing out which means taking the dash apart) most radiator shops will just replace the core with a new one and be done with it.

If you didn't need the heat, or for a test, you could just bypass the heater core by rerouting the hoses within the engine compartment.

Re: How to defog windshield when A/C doesn't work..

Hey guys, so im convinced this is a leaking heater core... I've tried to pay attention to it, and I am definately getting a coolant smell when i turn on the heat. I spent about 30 minutes cleaning the windshield and it didn't help at all. Im getting fog on nice days where it shouldn't be fogging. All leads me to believe it is a leaking core that is blowing moisture on the windshield.

If I do have a leaking heater core -- what are some other symptoms? (passenger floor is not wet).

How involved is the replacement, what costs and I am looking at?

Is there anything I can inspect visually?

Any help is appreciated, I gotta get rid of this fog!

Lastly, I did do a fix for the blend doors a few years ago that involved cutting into the housing around the vents, putting the new doors in, and retaping the cut out part. Could this be related?

If you smell coolant, it's definitely the heater core. It has to be replaced, and that's expensive because there's a lot of disassembly just to get to it. If you can't afford that, maybe you should just plug up the defrost vents. Also, check your coolant level regularly so you don't burn up your engine.

And be sure you do not have the "recirculate" button on.
