How to put Jeep 4x4 in neutral for towing when key is not recognized

Got stranded yesterday with a key that was not recognized. Had to have my 2011 JGC towed on a flatbed, but could not turn the vehicle on to shift the gear shift to neutral. The tow truck driver got underneath the Jeep and "popped something off" with a screwdriver on the transmission case and the vehicle went into neutral.

Any idea on what he actually did? I'm assuming that it can be popped back and that there will be no damage to the transmission.

Has anyone heard of this?

It's sitting at the dealership now waiting for them to open on Monday. I'd like to take my spare key up there to see if it works, but I am hesitant to try to start it with the transmission being manually put into neutral.

Pull the rubber liner out bottom of the cupholders. After that look don in them and in the back one there is a little cover that can be popped off, under that is a manual release for the shift lever.

Did you try to start it with the start button removed and the keyfob physically in the ignition? I had a bunch of trouble with my keyless system a few months back for about 2-3 months because of waiting on parts and the dealer to figure out what was going on where start button and other proximity stuff didn't work but never had any problems with it starting by sticking the keyfob in the ignition.
