Re: I messed up

Give it a good hard run up the freeway. That often sets thing right with the fuel system. I think it's call an Italian tune.

Re: I messed up

The other day, I parked the Jeep going to school and picked up my bag from the rear seat. I kept hearing this fan running noise. I thought it was the cooling fan as it was a hot day. Then as I start to walk away from the Jeep.. i look back and I can feel like the fan is running. So, to double check, I walk close to the front of the hood and hear the Jeep running.

Yikes... I am glad I found it quickly otherwise it would have run for the next 3 hours. I agree that the Jeep should shut off after you walk about 1000 ft away from the Jeep.
Otherwise, I would be happy with 5 min shut off after key removal too.

Just curious. How does other cars with keyless start work? Do they shut off or keep running like the Jeep does?

The only problem with this is following scenario: Let say your wife leaves with the car key when you dropped her off at whatever ... Now going home at the highway the Jeep decides to shut off after 15 minutes in the fast lane.

Not sure how would you solve something like this... BIG countdown on EVIC maybe telling you that you have "XX until self destruct"?

Isn't the fuel pickup (pump) always sucking from the bottom of the tank? Any fuel pump, along with the strainer sock and pickup, I ever replaced was located on the bottom of the tank.

JeepGuy026 is on a distinguished road
Why not just run some fuel system cleaner in it, couldn't hurt maybe some crap in the bottom of the tank is clogging the fuel system.

Re: I messed up

To the people recommend running fuel cleaner. I don't think that's anywhere near the problem because if it was a contamination problem it would be only during startup. Not only that but I would imagine a 2011/2012 would be too new to have a significant amount of "junk" at the bottom of the tank that can be sucked up.
I'm no professional, but I was under the impression a fuel pump is lubricated and kept cool by being submerged in and fuel as well as having a constant flow through it. So again, if anything is wrong my vote goes to fuel pump.
I say don't waste your time with any sort of fuel system cleaner or anything like that. Just take it to a dealership and say its having startup issues. Don't mention you ran it dry ;-)

Re: I messed up

I ran my 2012 Hemi dry on the Interstate. After I put a couple of gallons of fuel in it, it started right back up and I haven't had any problems.

Re: I messed up

I recall another owner leaving his jeep running all day by accident.

The urban legend/myth was that excessive idling clogs the catalytic converters. Not sure if that is true on new modern engines and no easy way to test that I know of. Perhaps a good highway run would loosen any carbon that would have built up.

Re: I messed up

Not sure if the Hemi runs hot or cold when it is idling for a long time but assuming it runs cold, the plugs could be oiled up. Again, take it for a hot burn up the freeway to clear the plugs.

Re: I messed up

Could have damaged the fuel pump from running it dry. Take it to the dealer but leave out the story

I'm sure they could easily set it so it wouldn't shut off unless it was in Park.

Because there's a much greater opportunity for something to go wrong, possibly threatening lives. For example, your key fob's battery voltage might drop below critical ("go dead") while you're driving a mountain route. As far as the vehicle is concerned, the fob is gone. After fifteen minutes, while you're navigating a tricky curve with a sheer drop-off to one side, the engine shuts down and takes out the power steering, power brakes, and traction control. You flatten the guard rail and take a header over the side. Your heirs sue Chrysler for big bucks.
