Re: I need head!

Could be a burned valve, a blown head gasket, dropped valve seat, or a cracked head - only the last should require replacement. If an overtemp issue I would expect 3 or 4 to go first, 2 is on the front end and generally a little cooler.

What did the head look like or is it off yet ?

ps found this: " The cast oil passages are either blocked or severely restricted. Another fact is the huge back order of heads. Chysler is trying to replace all these problem heads and at the same time keep a healthy supply for new production." would explain a "tic" but not a poor leakdown test.

Re: I need head!

It will be interesting to see if these problems originated from v6's made in Mexico.

People are complaining of the ticking sound coming from the "drivers side" of the engine and some people have commented that the #2 cylinder is on the left side.

Re: I need head!

Ugh, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) just came on with mine yesterday. Brought it in to the dealer this morning and it's the P0302 code as well. I've noticed no rough problems with running/etc. otherwise. They just cleared the code and so we're gonna see whether it comes on again. Waiting now for them to do a quick oil change and then I'll be out and on my way again.

Guess I better start looking into an extended warranty ... or maybe switch to a diesel option next year.

Re: I need head!

If you are not paying for the rental I would feel alot better. Even with the warranties they only cover 35 dollars per day for 7 to 10 days I believe.

The cheapest rental in these parts is 68 dollars a day and comes to 100 a day with insurance etc etc.

There is a tsb where the pentastars between certain dates had dirt in the process and an engine replacement is the call for that one. It caused the heads to go first. I wll link to it in an edit. may or may not be related, just saying..

http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/rc_L3311.pdf It looks like it is for 2012 vehicles so maybe it doesnt stem from this one.

They cleared the code and so far, it's not showing back up. If it does, I'll let y'all know.

Re: I need head!

My 2011 JGC w/9,000 mi. also needs a new head, I was told Chrysler is re-engineering and it will be over a month wait. Mechanic said valves were burnt in all three cylinders.

Hrm. I'll keep an eye out for it. So far, it hasn't come back.

Re: I need head!

Getting my head on Monday!

P0302, intermittent at first, now on all the time. No other symptoms (ticking, engine stuttering, etc.)

Only took the dealer a week to get the "remanufactured" head in. They are providing a rental too.

Will update.

Re: I need head!

Mine ended up needing a new camshaft Phazer...no signs of a misfire, so all is good for now.

Came back yesterday. Guess it's another trip to the dealer for me. I don't notice any other symptoms though ... except that remote start doesn't work now (it starts but won't stay on probably because of the malfunction indicator light status).
