The valve body was replaced yesterday with a new revision. No comparison to previous runs at this in how it shifts now. Smooth cold or hot. No long user learning curve either. Here is the part # that was part in:

#RL259301AA

Hopefully, that may provide guidance to others that have the rough shifting return. I am expecting this condition to last.

Shoestring,
Is that new valve body for the smaller 8 speed used with the 6 cyl engines or for the larger trans used with the bigger V8 hemis????

This is the valve body for the V6 8 speed. I didn't pay anything, it was covered under warranty. Today, I pulled my 4500# boat. Shifts are literally imperceptible. THIS is how a $45K vehicle should shift. FINALLY!!

Where did you have this done and what do I need to do to do it? I will drive to Oshkosh if I have to!

I'm not so sure an imperceptibly soft shift is what you want for durability. A firm shift reduces slip and wear....especially when towing. Hopefully it's not really imperceptible to the point that gear engagement slips excessively!

If you accelerated steady but slow before, each gear shift would cause the vehicle to shudder, I don't think that will make the transmission last. It now shifts like you would expect. A tow with a GM Silverado is equally smooth. If you put the hammer down, the shifts are obviously more harsh, but this isn't how I drive when towing.

SnoFire, I had it done at Bergstrom Jeep in Oshkosh. What ultimately drove STAR to the conclusion to authorize replacement of the valve body was the horrid behavior when cold. I made sure to specify to the service advisor to have the tech check it when cold. The behavior was very intermittent when warm.

Re: I Think I Fixed My Rough Shifting 8sp Transmission

Interesting. Yes, shudder is bad! Mine shuddered before the last TSB which hopefully fixed it. Colder weather is coming so we shall see.

Re: I Think I Fixed My Rough Shifting 8sp Transmission

Update: Happy to report that after several weeks and many times towing, the new valve body is holding smooth shifts. No clunky upshifts or downshifts hot or cold. I hope I can still say that in January.
