Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

I wondered the same thing, why have a learning mode, if it works so much better without it???

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

I'm kinda hoping this will be my last post on this subject,
My dealer installed a new trans valve body into my 2014 SRT, and did a new install of the learning software.
The trans was working perfect so I took it on a 400 mile road trip... When I got to my destination, the trans while fine on the highway began acting up in low speed around town driving, almost worse than it was prior to the above repair...I called the dealer and told him when I returned home, I was going to bring it back in... So a few days later I drove the 400 miles back home... And noticed that my trans was now shifting about 95 % better than it was prior to the repairs, even in slow traffic conditions, the problem downshifts were almost no more.....I called the dealer back and advised that now after about 800 miles, it was shifting OK, I told him I would drive it for a while more and see what happens, its been about a week now and it is still shifting so much better than it did before the repairs, I'm hoping that it remains that way.... I still think Chrysler may need to come out with a software update for this transmission to truly get it shifting as it should, and it was weird that after the repair it went from good, to terrible, (400 miles) and now back to good (800 miles) Perhaps it had something to do with its new learning program..... The trans has been an issue for me since day one, but it is now livable, if it just stays this way.....
I hope this helps others who have been experiencing low speed down shifting issues

I was going to try the battery disconnect fix since I've taken it to the dealer multiple times and they insist that it's shifting "normally."

Is it just me or is the battery nearly impossible to get to?? I don't see how you'd be able to change it even with the passenger seat moved all the way forward.

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

Has anyone had their transmission get stuck in a certain gear? Today on the freeway just after I accelerated up to speed the transmission shifted into 8th and at the same time I got an electronic throttle control alarm. When I pulled off the freeway, I found I was stuck in 8th, not even the paddle shifters would drop it down a gear. I pulled over to a complete stop and it roughly dropped down into 4th. Tried turning the car off/on, selected reverse then drive but couldn't get it out of 4th. Ended up driving on a bit further then pulled over again and turned the car off for awhile which fixed the problem, I still have the engine light up but that may be due to the 'replace oil' message? My car started shifting roughly a bit over a month ago but it only does it when it shifts up a gear once I've reached my desired cruising speed, like it engine brakes momentarily in the higher gear.

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

Well, my transmission has started to get worse instead of better. I've noticed that it holds on to first gear for a lot longer than it used to, even when accelerating lightly. This is especially true when the engine is cold. Surprisingly, I often get to as much as 14 mph before the transmission decides to shift into 2nd gear---and that's with VERY light throttle. This only started happening recently. Before, it would upshift almost too soon. Hell, I've seen the thing go from 1st gear to 6th gear by no more than 40 MPH with light throttle.

I've also noticed that the shifting is a lot more rough now, but that's probably because it's shifting at a higher RPM. Downshifting used to be completely transparent (meaning very smooth), but now it's noticeable, to say the least. It's not harsh, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens next.

And of course the bang from 1st to 2nd gear is worse than ever. It cannot be good for the transmission to bang into gear like that.

Maybe I need to drive the thing like I stole it. I wonder if that will change anything about the adaptive learning.

Msca, did you already have the valve body replaced? The behavior you describe is exactly how mine behaved prior to valve body replacement.

Not yet....that's my next step, if I can just get the dealership guys to do it. It was hard enough getting them to do the adaptive learning procedure in the first place.

So how has yours been? I've read your latest posts, but any more recent updates?

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

Much better overall. Occasional hard shifts to first when coming to a stop, but otherwise reasonable. It has been 1500 miles since replacement.

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

It occurred to me today, does anyone know or checked to see if this problem exists in the Dodge Durango? Does it have the same power train as the Jeep? While eating my lunch today ACROSS from a Dodge/Jeep dealer while sitting in my Jeep, it only took 25 minutes of a Navy Blue Durango on their lot to "trigger" this thought!! Dave

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

Might be a good Idea to check a Dodge Durango Forum to see if they are having the same transmission issues

Re: If your 8spd trans is rough, put your hand up

I think if you research the users having issues, most have the two speed transfer case. The Durango v6 only has the single speed, like a base level Laredo. My Dad just traded his JGC Overland-2014 for a loaded citadel v6 - shifts like silk - imagine that.

Well that is interesting; my dealer sells Dodge so I guess I will ask someone next time I am there, very curious about this. Thanks, Dave
