Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

I have this same issue. Please keep us posted as to what the dealer finds. When I hear the sound it seems to be coming from the rear differential/axle. It will be interesting if it is actually the T-case. My Jeep just passed 7k on the ODO. The sound seems to be occurring more often than it used to but it was definitely there from day one. It really made quite a bit of noise when off roaring in 4Low. I have held off taking it to the dealer since it does not occur all of the time.

Yes that's what it sounds like. In fact the first thing they replaced on mine was the rear differental. When that didn't work they replaced the rear brakes, rear wheel bearings and rear prop shaft. What they found in the end was the noise was in the transfer case and the noise was being tranmitted to the rear via the driveshaft.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Took it to the dealer near my home and it was told to me and noted on my checkout sheet that the tech was able to duplicate both sounds but after confering with Chrysler and duplicating the same sounds in another unit in the dealer's stock, the noise is not considered unusual.

My plan is to take it back in and ask for work to be done if the sounds become more pronounced or effect performance.

As a side note, all the computer update tsb's have been perfomed on my jeep.

That's good to hear. If its not getting any worse and not affecting anything I would just wait before doing anything. When I was having the problem these were still new and the dealer and chrysler did not know what it was. I can say from experience that you don't want any work done on it if its not necessary. When they start tearing the drivetrain apart its never the same. In my opinion.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Thanks for letting us know how it went at the dealer. I was considering taking it in next week but I think I will hold off. I agree that the less the dealer tears apart the better. The drive train will be under warranty another 4+ years so if this noise is a symptom of a major issue developing I imagine it will go out under warranty. Plus, if they are just going to tell me it is "normal" why bother. I just hope if something does go out in the T-case that I am not out on some remote forest road.

It certainly is a bit irritating paying $36k for a vehicle and having it make a "normal" moaning sound in stop and go traffic. Can't wait to have my friends sitting in the car in ski traffic this winter asking me what is wrong with my new Jeep.... I guess I will just say, "it's a Jeep thing." This is my first non-Japanese vehicle and other than the driveline noise I have been pleased. If the Jeep does not age well it is back to Honda/Toyota for me.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Just a quick update on this issue. The noise seems to be more regular now rather than intermittent. I am going to bring it up with the dealer on the next oil change. It definitely seems to be the T-case as indicated by others here. When coasting to a stop I hear the moaning sound when in Auto mode but the noise goes away when I switch to Sport mode.

Please keep us up to date, I am also still working out how to get Jeep to fix this issue, supposedly the second dealer I took it to, the selling dealer who also did the gas tank tsb for me, has a case open for me with Jeep since they don't know what causing the issue and they believe its abnormal (so do I). Right now I am just putting some miles on to make sure everythings broken in and get some enjoyment before I let them play daycare again with my Jeep.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

I have had the same moaning sound that occurs at low speed, typically 5mph or less, and is more noticeable while coasting but is still there even under slight throttle. I have also noticed, from day one, that the Jeep seems to not coast as freely as you would expect, from any speed. When you let off the throttle, there is an immediate and noticeable drag occuring, although I don't see poor fuel mileage (3.6L).

In any event, I finally got my dealer, at 24,000 miles, to check into the sound. Some bit of diagnostic sleuthing later we figured out it was the transfer case - the mechanic simply unplugged the control wires from it, the sound quit and as expected we got a "Service 4WD" light. Plugging the wires back in, the sound returned and the light went out. Since the fluid in the t-case was noticeably dark, we went ahead and changed it.

The sound went away, or at least lessened considerably, but after a few hundred miles it is now returning, and after a few more thousand miles, it's about as bad as before.

After the holidays and all our planned driving, I'll take it back in and see what next steps the dealer wants to take with it. BTW, my dealer has been pretty good about paying attention to the TSBs and such and applying any I ask for - after figuring out that I know a lot about my vehicle and what TSB's are applicable and such, thanks to this forum.

I just noticed the same exact symptoms today. I was in traffic coasting and there is a low moan with vibration at about 5mph. Almost sounds like an airplane flying by. Only 5,000 miles on my rig.

We have the same issue. Dealer says they can't duplicate it. I'll make them take a ride with me after turkey day. Bruce

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Had the same issue since day 1, 2012 Overland Hemi. Dealer says nothing is wrong with it. It doesn't bother me much, and I'm not willing to give them my new truck to play with if they don't know what they're doing, so for me the fix lies in the volume knob.
