Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

I don't know if this is the same issue but our 2012 Overland is making a noise in which we notice when we are going slower and after we go over bumps. I thought it sounded more like a bad shock or strut. We also have been hearing a hissing noise from the rear end when we first start the Overland like the air shocks are leaking or something. We also had a 2011 Overland and did not have either one of these sounds.? Thoughts?

To know if you have this exact issue, go about 10mph in a straight line, let off the gas and let the Jeep coast down to about 5mph, when getting to that speed you should hear an obtrusive moan occuring from the back half of the vehicle.

This is definately a drive train issue although it does sound like brakes and dealers do try to work on them first. Going over bumps with a thudding sound and the hissing might be a seperate suspension issue, I had my rear shocks replaced to fix a rattle when going over washboard surfaces.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Well, finally got the Jeep in to the dealer. Brought in an engineer, and tore down the xfer case. Decided that we need a new one. Supposedly they will get it replaced in the next day or two. Dealer has been pretty good about this repair and a couple of issues- key recognition (PEM), premature driver seat wear, missing badge. They have it for 10 days now, but at least they provided a rental car at their expense. We'll see how it goes when we get it back. Bruce

Did they see anything after they tore down the xfer case?

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Had a fairly long talk with the service manager today. He and the engineer say the problem is with a clutch in the xfer case. They say that if the transfer case is disconnected electronically from the control module, the noise stops. Hook it back up, and the noise comes back. They tore it apart, and saw no abnormal wear or shavings in the xfer case, but they put a new one anyway. At this point, they are trying to figure out what to do about it long term, as it seems that this issue is coming up more often, and they don't know if is a longevity issue or not. The new is case is quieter than the old, but there is still some faint noise. I'm going to monitor it for a few months, and if it continues, or becomes a driveability issue, I may consider lemoning it. Bruce

Just started having the same moaning issue. Other drivers were staring. I assume they were worried my car was going to fall apart.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

bimmer and any others, please keep updating this thread with you dealer experiences, I am still waiting to go all in and demand the transfer case overhaul. I would like to see a TSB issued like they did for the SRT xsfer case, which they just cycle the fluid on really.

I got 7 months / 4000 miles and the noise has stayed the same, basically a loud moan 100% of the time when slowly traveling through 5mph, up or down and a quick intermittent rub when accelerating normally from a stop.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Finally took mine to the dealer today since the sound became consistent. They changed the fluid in the differentials and T-Case since I have 30k on the ODO now. So far it seems to have helped. There is still noise but it is much quieter and not as consistent as it has been. They said they inspected everything and did not hear anything out of the ordinary. They created a file and told me to bring it back in if it started happening again. While the noise is not as prevalent it is still there which is frustrating. At the same time I am not sure I want to take the chance of having the dealer tear apart the drive train and hope they put it back together correctly.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

I have had this same problem with a 2011 Laredo 4x4 v6. It is consistent at 5 mph just like others say. The dealer I am taking it to I did not buy from so they are not easy to deal with... They said they have the case in with and engineer at Chrysler. That was in August... guess what not a peep back from them on the issue yet even after I checked in in Sept. If anyone gets a solution to this let us know! By the way I also have an odd vibration, humm at 45mph+ that the dealer says is related. I have posted this in another thread. this moa is bad when I drive in a parking lot people turn their heads when they hear it.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

I have this exact noise. 8-10km/hr. while coasting. I am now noticing it at higher speeds 30-40km while coasting down from higher speeds. they did my rear diff. rear drive shaft (screwed that up and had to replace it again) they took apart my T-case and found metal filings. flushed it. but noise is still there I now have 32,000km on it. Chrysler Canada customer care has been in contact with me since I first brought it in 9 months ago. They told me they don't know what the noise is but it is safe. I brought information in from the website and they refused to go off information on the web. Traits on my jeep about this noise (2011 Laredo x 3.6L) Noise does not happen on the lift. Noise does not happen with over 850lbs in the car. Jeep refuses to put in writing any extended warranty for any parts that could be related. they just say "I will be taken care of if the time comes" I have also had a ball bearing crack already, and currently have a rattling sound when I go over rough surfaces that sounds like its in the rear. I have owned 4 other Cherokees and never had an issue. only to be followed with this. I am going to bring in this thread when I next bring my jeep in.

Re: intermittent rub / moan upon accelerating from a stop or <5mph

Well just an update for anyone out there with the same problem I described above... It has been fixed by a recent software update TSB 21-004-13! I will be testing a lot this weekend to see if it is truly completely gone.
