Yes, I followed this thread religiously for the longest time and it would be interesting to know the final chapter. I hope things worked out well?

Re: It's Official, I Regret My Purchase

Sorry for the long delay in providing an update. I was not really comfortable discussing the situation as I retained a lawyer on June 16th and he filed a lemon law complaint with Chrysler shortly thereafter. This was around the same time that the car went back to the dealer. Chrysler brought a factory representative out to drive the vehicle. The service manager told me that he knew every problem I was having with the vehicle without looking at the history of this case. He said that this is an artifact of the MDS system. My service manager did lots of homework and drove other (new) cars on the lot as well as others he had in for service. He said mine was by far the worst so he asked the rep about this. The rep told him that the torque converter does not start to really lock-up for 2,000 - 3,000 miles and it takes a full 6k - 7k miles to fully engage / dis-engage as designed. So my understanding is that early on the car allows more slippage. The slippage, in theory, mutes some of the characteristics of the drivetrain. As the TC break-in you begin to feel more things like shudder, thuds, vibrations, etc. because when locked up it is essentially a direct connection. The service manager seemed to believe that was a little weird and I felt like he understood that position is incredibly frustrating. I even asked him what the point of a test drive was if the car is expected to drive significantly different in a few months. At that point, I told him that I was going to retain a lawyer and pursue this matter with Chrysler. I told him it was not a reflection of him or his team. In fact, I stuck it out much longer because I liked those guys quite a bit.

In the end, Chrysler agreed to repurchase the vehicle. I turned it back in this Wednesday. They refunded the full purchase price of the car plus reasonable attorney's fees. I can also recover the NYS sales tax that I paid. The whole process took about 4 months.

Short of a new transmission or transfer case there were very limited options for further attempts of repair. During this process I continued to drive the vehicle. Sometimes it drove great, other times it drove horribly, often with passengers in the car. The thunks and thuds during shifts continued. The odd drivetrain engagement when first accelerating from a stop worsened (almost like the rear wheels start to go and the front wheels realize they are late to the party so they jump in suddenly). I also noticed a lot of shaking when you let your foot off the gas. Supposedly this is all related to the MDS. But I was able to replicate much of these problems in Tow/Haul mode when MDS is disabled. The car also developed weird electrical bugs from time to time: Key not Detected, GPS location was inaccurate, GPS database not found, time changes on the clock, and the random alarm incidences continued.

A lot of people seem very happy with their car so I do not want to scare anyone. I did want to give everyone an honest update. I do wish the outcome had been different because there is a lot of good in this model. I was so excited when I bought this car; I had wanted a Jeep since I was 14. If I had it to do over again I would have bought a Limited V6 with the Lux Package and 20" wheels. I think less complicated would have been the way to go.

In terms of the overall car here are some things I noticed after a year of ownership. I averaged 21-22mpg on the highway and 16-17mpg around town. Better than I expected for sure. The vented seats were a nice touch and I am going to miss the heated steering wheel this winter. I never got fully comfortable with the seats. On a five hour drive I had to stop three times to stretch (whereas I routinely drove straight through in my TL). The speedometer and tachometer are not ideally placed. I hate that they are blocked by the steering wheel. The windows are too reflective of interior components. Day or night, I could see parts of the car like it was a mirror. It's very distracting. My window switches were buggy. You really had to yank on them to get them up or down. The headlights were amazing. The brakes showed minimal wear after 19k miles. The trunk is bigger than I thought. I would not get the air suspension again - I worry about reliability and think it was overkill for someone like me. The seats appeared to hold up well but I noticed more rattles and shaking in the car. You notice it because this car has one of the quietest interiors I have ever experienced. The sound system is amazing and the uConnect bluetooth (once updated for the iPhone) was top notch.

My lawyer was absolutely fantastic. He took the case on a contingency basis and the whole matter was settled out of court. It is a painfully slow process but in the end I was made whole on the matter. I would have been killed if I had attempted to trade in the car.

One thing to note on my final dealership experience: I had to drop the car off at Saratoga Chrysler. When I walked in EVERYBODY was staring at me, including the aforementioned General Manager. I was courteous enough to schedule the drop off during my lunch hour so as not to interfere with their busy time of the day (evenings). The turn in was handled by the Sales Manager whom I had not met before. He was reasonable and joked around with me. My co-worker came with me to drive me back to work. He overheard one of the sales guys talking to the General Manager about me. The sales rep said something to the extent of, Ya know that guy who wrote you the f***in e-mail? He's here! (It was a voicemail and I alerted him to some unfortunate things going on at his dealership.) The General Manager replied that he knew and that somehow I get to give the car back. He couldn't believe it. Classy even up until the end. I am still surprised that not one person at that dealership said, "Hey, I'm really sorry you went through all of this. This is very unusual."

Oh well. It's all behind me now. So I guess this chapter has come to a close. It's sort of sad but based on the odd behaviors of the car I could see some expensive non-powertrain repairs headed my way one the bumper to bumper was up. I realize that is purely speculation but I just never trusted it and probably would have been looking for things to break. That's not fair to me or Chrysler. So in the end I know this was the right thing to do.

I am glad that Chrysler stood behind the car and tried to correct the situation as best they could. It seems like a lot of people on this forum really like their cars and mine was probably a rare thing.

I do really appreciate the support of everyone here. This is one of the best forums I have ever seen. There are a lot of smart and helpful people in this group. I hope everyone else enjoys their cars and does not have anything close to the problems I did.

Sorry for your experience. Glad it worked out. So what are you getting as a replacement? (Are you still out there??)

Re: It's Official, I Regret My Purchase

I know how you feel my parents 03' Limited has had so many problems that it's almost funny. Everything that was ever a problem on those Jeeps went wrong on this one from the heat and air not working to the hvac door thing breaking to the steering creaking and everyone of the power window motor clip things breaking and the Jeep only has 42K miles on it. I've been lucky with my 05' I had a few small issues like the one power door lock won't work, radio steering control is stuck, and I had a few air bag warning and traction warning light issues but the main problem was the exhaust manifold gasket. I try to fix as many of the issues as I can but my power train run's out in March and after that i'm screwed. Good luck with having your stuff repaired, luckly you're still int eh full warranty period.

Re: It's Official, I Regret My Purchase

I'm still around. I went right back to a Japanese brand. I wanted to go back to something I knew and was comfortable with. I started cross-shopping other SUV's online and the more I thought about it the more I wished I had never gotten rid of my TL. So I did lots of research on year end Acura's and located a 2011 TSX that was exactly what I wanted. It's totally different from the Jeep, I realize that. But I just felt like I tried this out and it wasn't what I expected so I wanted to go back to something where I knew exactly what I was getting (the good and the bad). I know that I got a bit spooked and wanted something that would be predictable. I went with the TSX because I wanted to spend less money than a TL would have cost and because it's seats fold down allowing pass through of large objects (the TL does not which got me into this situation in the first place).

If I felt I couldn't get away with a sedan for a while, I would have gone out and bought a 2012 Pilot. It's totally lame on the surface compared to the Jeep. But it's reliable, incredibly space efficient, and gets really good gas mileage this year for a big honking SUV.

I am eagerly going to be watching for the CRD to make its way into the lineup and for the much anticipated 8speed transmission to make its way into the GC and Durango. I'll be curious to see how those work out (hopefully well for Jeep and future owners!). I am pretty sure though that Chrysler hopes they never hear from me again.

Re: It's Official, I Regret My Purchase

Between all the half shafts and brake recalls on my wife's "07 Odyssey I would rather take a chance on another manufacturer.

Re: It's Official, I Regret My Purchase

Don't let either of them off the hook easily. Chrysler already knew about all the problems, if they didn't they do now. And the dealership definitely knew about the problems, they ripped you off big time. That sucks bad.

Re: It's Official, I Regret My Purchase

For what it is worth, I just purchased a Laredo X from this dealer. The internet sales manager Scott was great to deal with. No pressure, e-mailed me a great price, showed me the lease tables, gave me a fair price on my trade without hassle and threw in a few accesories i wanted. I had seen this thread, but they had the Jeep I wanted coming in. It is a pretty small operation, so I probably wont use them for any warranty work and I will DIY all the maintenance. From a sales perspective it was certainley a lot better than the slimy floor guy at Armory!

That's great, but all dealerships have their good and bad. If a dealership was all bad then, they would now be a used car only dealer! I tried to work with all 3 Jeep dealers in Albany and had by far the best experience with Armory. They are a large dealer so I went in with low expectations, but sales, service, parts were all competent, competitive and friendly at Armory, so far. Now, I did run into a rather rude older salesman there, but that was after I did my order with my guy.

True, it's always a crap shoot when you have roll the dice for that test drive. Glad to hear Armory could be a good option if I need anything.
