Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

LOL, I don't understand the point of what you're trying to say. My Lexus has a matching full size spare, but more expensive models than mine with bigger, larger diameter wheels have temporary spares. It's not the carmaker being cheap, it's that putting a big 20" wheel under the floorboards in the trunk takes up too much space and adds too much weight.

The fact that your Xterra had a matching spare has no relevance to this topic because it didn't have a big, 20" rim.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

If you're talking to me, I had a Grand Cherokee, not an Xterra. I'll assume you're talking to someone else. My point was Grand Cherokee Limiteds offered a full size matching spare wheel for the WK with the right options, and they no longer offer it with the new WK2 model, so Jeep is offering less in this situation than it did on the previous same model. Seems relevant to the conversation.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

Yeah but when you look at what they offer over and above what they offered on the WK, I think a steel wheel on the spare vs a matching aluminum wheel is a small price to pay. When a vehicle is built to a price, somethings got to give.

I would trade the matching wheel on the spare for just the interior material quality difference between the WK and WK2, let alone any of the other numerous improvements. That isn't the point of the OP's post though, he's upset that the 20" wheel doesn't fit in the well. The 18" wheel does, but the 20" one does not.

I've had lots of cars with matching spares that never saw the light of day. HORRIBLE interior quality as was there on the WK...and the WJ... gets seen every day.

Just get a sledgehammer and bang out a bigger wheel well.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

They started compact spares in the 1967 Firebird so has been going on for a while. The wheel diameter does not matter so long as the overall tire diameter is the same as the road wheels and the load range matches the use. Offset vs king pin inclination is also important if used in the front to keep the steering from pulling.

Frankly, for temporary use, a compact spare leaves more room for other "stuff" and is easier for a small person to lift though will probably not be rated for rock climbing.

What I found interesting is that my Laredo's spare is a 245x65x18" H-rated Kumho & could probably use a small derrick to remove from the well.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

Yeah I don't have an issue with temporary spares. Like I said, knock on wood, I've had one flat in the last 10 years. Called roadside assistance and they came and changed it. Drove it 2 miles to the tire shop, had it patched. Hell...a lot of times they can just plug them right there at the scene.

The vehicle I had that flat on had a temporary spare. I was okay looking goofy for those 4 miles. Obviously the normal wheel wouldn't fit in the spare compartment so I left it in the back...again...no big deal...it was in there for 10 minutes and it was back on the car.

Obviously, if you're on a trip in the middle of nowhere its more of an imposition to be on a doughnut spare, but thats why Jeep does offer a spare that is full size, it might not be on the same pretty wheel, but its full size.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

The guy who started this doesn't understand what the spare is for; I don't know anyone that rotates tires with all 5. But even if he wants to do that; leave the wheel in your garage and just take it to the shop when you rotate them. It is there just for the rare chance you get a flat; and sure if your on the road it might be a pita to get a flat fixed; but most of the time you should be near a tire store. Can someone at least change the subject line of this thread?

Raises hand. Obviously I don't anymore with the new Jeep.

Thread title is fine. It's an opinion.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

Spares are going to disappear from a lot vehicles over the next five years to meet Comrade Barry's fleet mpg regs. Run flats suck and its cheaper to 86 the full size spare to save roughly 50lbs then it is to engineer other weight saving measures. My brother refuses to take his 2011 3 series on road trips because of the run flats and PITA is to find a replacement or get one plugged if you get a flat. Maybe Romney will get elected and ban run flats in the US.

Haven't driven a vehicle with run flats that perform as well as cheap Chinese tires with same speed rating. Even Michelins run flats are awful but the best of the bunch.

Re: JEEP Engineers suck!

At least the cargo area is large enough to store kleenex boxes for all the times someone needs to cry about something.
