Jeep Grand Cherokee in headliner fire probe

Jeep Grand Cherokee in headliner fire probe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching an investigation into 146,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs from the 2012 model year, The Detroit News reports. This comes as the result of the government safety agency receiving three complaints from owners who cited fires inside the Jeep's cabin.

According to the report, NHTSA says:
"The customers reported a burning odor and visible smoke coming from the headliner while the vehicle was being driven. This was followed by flames from the headliner itself. Customers lowered the windows in an effort to clear the smoke but this increased the fire's intensity. All three vehicles had to be extinguished with a fire extinguisher or by the fire department as they continued to burn after the vehicle was turned off."

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee in headliner fire probe

Just saw this article on MSN's Auto section homepage. Crazy stuff mang.

Further on the NHTSA report:

"The three fires had to be extinguished because they kept burning after the car was turned off. In one case the fire shattered the sunroof, and in another the burning visor fell onto the passenger seat and set the seat on fire."

Talk about having the passenger be in a hot seat.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee in headliner fire probe

Automotive News (source for the MSN Auto article):

"In a filing Monday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has received three reports of fires in the headliner of the SUV near the passenger-side sun visor."

http://www.autonews.com/article/2013...robed-by-nhtsa

Any ideas what components/electronics are located in the passenger-sun visor that could cause something like this?

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee in headliner fire probe

I wonder if there's any correlation between the fires and the amount of time the lighted vanity mirror is in use.
