Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

In this LA Times piece that broke the story, an LAPD officer was quoted as stating "...it appeared that Yelchin had not properly put his car in park..." which we all know is NOT the same thing as the car being in neutral, especially with this shifter.

There were several reports that stated that. Here's one from Fox News:

"TMZ has reported that the vehicle had not received the update and was in neutral at the time of the accident."

TMZ:
"Law enforcement tells us the engine was running when his body was discovered, and the car was in neutral. The driveway was on a fairly steep incline. It's unclear why he got out of the car."

I just got the tsb flash done today when taking my Jeep in for a low tire - which they fixed and scratched the rim in the process, but I digress.

Apparently the TSB was released today to be incorporated and I was the first one at my dealership to have it done. The service advisor simply told me that I'll no longer be able to have my door open either backing up or pulling forward at slow speeds. So in my parking lot at work I tried it. I put it in reverse so the vehicle was just creeping and I opened the driver's door and it immediately put itself into Park.

I'm not sure at which speed this will happen but I can see people going at a higher rate of speed and opening their door and locking up their tranny. However I'm betting that there's some kind of writing in the software that says what speed it'll be able to put itself into park but I was not about to test it on my transmission.

Edit..... I really did like on occasion when backing up into a tight spot to open my door to see exactly where I was, but I guess that no longer will be possible. Sigh.

I don't consider TMZ "news" and I don't know many who do.

But if it will make you sleep better, I'm happy to amend my statement by adding "that I've seen".

But no matter what anyone reports, nobody really knows what happened in this case.

And I'm really done talking about it, so have a lovely day. Peace out!

*&&%&* that's what i was afraid of, idiots can't take responsibility = a stupid ****ing fix by FCA to appease the idiots. I don't want a vehicle that slams into park just because I pop the door open to dump cold coffee or old soda on the ground.

dammit i hate stupid people

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about that backing thing also. So question if you leave your seat belt on, open door to look out to back will it still throw it in to park with seat belt on? Be nice if it was canceled with seat belt on

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

i would like to know the answer to the seat belt question because it sounds like this "fix" is going to suck. i too will open my door sometimes when city parking into a small space.

Said it before...they better let me sign off on no flash... i need my door open daily due to a need to back into a garage thats on an offset angle and a girl that hogs the rest of the garage..I work nights so mirrors are usless to me when backing in.
They will let me out of this or buy it back!

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

It is my understanding this recall is a "voluntary" one. So you can choose not to have it done.
True or no? Certainly my own experience with this shifter, has found it to be a bit "clunky" to say the least but one does kind of get used to its quirkyness.

This whole deal kind of reminds me of the old Ford tranmission that used to jump into reverse on their own.
I had one of those back in the day and almost lost the car as it started to back itself onto a rather
busy 4 lane road. I had to run after it and hop in while it was rolling to avoid a mess.
