Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

i always thought all are optional to the consumer but required (per type) by the mfr to offer and get high compliance (big hot button now)....service depts can get aggressive in driving higher compliance since u cant do a gd thing if they ignore your request to perform a safety recall....they'll sneak the 5hit in eventually.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

Hopefully this recall is a "voluntary" one.

I also sometimes need to reverse a small box trailer and need to see what the trailer is doing before it jack-knifes. The mirrors and reverse camera are not so good for seeing this.

I don't really see how they can force you to do it. It's your vehicle.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

yeah they can't, there's no law (for consumers/owners) to back it so they sic the dealer service dept on us since it's a decently paid steady flow of work for the dealer....it's stacked against "holding out" tactics

They are unable to sell the 15's off their lot until they are fixed. Im not sure but being a safety issue, they have to follow it, its not their decision to make.

not true, just bought mine got it friday

and if it were a FCA stop sale mandate ... they just sent me my "welcome to jeep" package yesterday congratulating me on the purchase of my 2015 JGC. So the dealer was good with selling it, and corporate had no problem either apparently.

not sure I'll bother fighting the 'fix' but I can see it being a pita to get used to every so often - pop door, slam into park, get pissed off

Interesting, can you open your door & still drive?

Okay did more testing this AM on the way to work.

WITH THE SEAT BELT FASTENED - Jeep does NOT put itself in park. So those of us who are belted in and open the door for parking adjustments are safe. Woo hooo. Sorry I didn't test that yesterday before posting.

So only when you are not clicked in will it Park itself upon opening the door.

Message comes up that says "Auto Park Engaged Press Brake + Push Button to Shift to Gear". All I had to do was press the brake of course and shift into gear after shutting my door to clear the message.

Not sure if this is a bug or not BUT even after shifting into D the message still said "Vehicle not in Park" instead of flashing back to the speedometer. I'll have to play with it again when I have more time.

Having not had the vehicle in Park or Reverse and trying to exit the vehicle before a few times - I like the safety feature. I've only had that happen a few times when wasn't in Park, but was easy to figure it out and quickly put it into Park.

But for those who need to pop back into the vehicle to move it ahead a foot when parking, it will be a pain 'cuz you'll need to fasten your seat belt to do it.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

I'm guessing any dealer will flash it as soon as it rolls through the door...no pun intended..
It is a major liability issue if they don't apply recalls.!

So yes voluntary as long as your car does not see the service dept. for any reason.
At this point you also may want to consider the flash before you sell or trade.
The lawyers are foaming from the mouth already on this one.

Thanks for checking that, glad they thought that through a bit. The fix sounds fine now injects the safety but not too intrusive.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

I had read it was coming sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, perhaps too late for Mr. Yelchin. It will be interesting to learn about what really happened as opposed to what has been speculated by the mainstream media to this point. Maybe they are one in the same, perhaps not. Time will tell.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the vehicle after the TSB has been applied--lovemyfirstjeep. I received a call this morning from the dealership, they notified me that the recall was ready and they wanted to get me in ASAP to have it applied. I've not returned the call yet to schedule the appointment. I don't want to be a guinea pig, but I'd feel better about having it applied more so for any others who need to drive my vehicle not familiar with the shifter. I am very much used to it at this point, it has forced me to pay closer attention to shifting than ever before with previous vehicles.

yes, I opened the door in "drive" and all I got was the display message "vehicle not in park"

the fix as described above sounds okay to me, in fact I could see all other mfg's taking the lead from FCA on that and making it an industry standard - there are lots of stories of people 'forgetting' to put their vehicles in park that would be solved by this fix (belted driver, open door, nothing ... unbelted driver, open door, auto-park engaged)

may actually turn out to be a new innovation rather than a total fail by FCA for 14/15
