Oh, right, I forgot about the update: it puts itself in park now!

Hopefully the engineers did extensive testing and that 1.2MPH speed leaves enough room for error where a couple times of this happening won't result in snapped pawls or damaged transmissions.
Or maybe u don't open your door when unbuckled, running, parking brake not on and trans not in park = parking pawl safe as "pick your safety idiom"

@Ljs8510 when I first noticed it I was sitting in my driveway about to get out and I always put it in neutral and apply the park brake .Then I decided to try to move the shifter and it engaged . It will even shift into gears with out pushing the shift button on the shifter

found it...

short quote but more here...

"If your unbuckle your seatbelt and open the door, the vehicle will auto park if it has not been placed in park. I tested that yesterday after getting it back and it works. "

yeah mine is going in this week also. I dont really need the update for me but more concrrned about loaning the jeep to a family member who wont be familar with it.

This is the 6th safety recall on my 2014 Summit, im certainly glad they are fixing safety items but those 6 plus another 15 visits for other un scheduled items has been a bit much. Many of theses modules have been flashed at least 3 or 4 times. They cant work every bug out of cars with as complex as they are getting but jeep really does need to put more time into testing before dumping stuff like this on the public.

Sometimes mine will do that & most if not all times when exiting a car wash. Im in neutral moving about 1-2mph and Im unable to shift unless I hit the brake.

I did not think this would happen, what the fix will be?

I just had the shifter recall performed; I went in because of a faulty oil pressure switch and was offered the recall. I wish I had not allowed them to perform it.

I have read threads that state that the operator must not have known that the vehicle was not in park. I think that there have been variations in the product, however it was not unusual for me to have to try to shift into park several times before it actually would. I have driven over 2.5 million miles and have never had a problem heretofore.

The "Fix', however is incompetent for those of us who occasionally open a door to see where we are on a trail or while backing up in a close space (No backup camera). The vehicle goes into park when you open the door! Period!

Instead of designing a program to allow it to go into park more readily or retrofitting new shifter contacts or '16 shifter, Fiat has done a repair on the cheap. Yes, it will prevent the vehicle from accidentally rolling but using the similar logic they could have avoided making vehicles and we would be that much safer.

The recall solution stinks!!

I also thought with seat belt connected it would not shift into park when opening a door.
Can you please let us know ?

Thanks

2014 Gear Shift Confusion
Just checked mine. In reverse, seat belt off, foot off brake= goes into auto park. With seat belt on= no auto park.
