Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

Thing is, it's easy to replace the tires - but the shifter, not so much

True, however current BMW suspensions are calibrated for the run flat tires, which are harder. Also still don't have a jack and a spare.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

This just in from ALLPAR.COM
The actual FCA “shifter fix”

by David Zatz on 2016-04-29
FCA is recalling over a million cars, mostly Chargers and 300s, with some Jeep Grand Cherokees thrown in. All have the eight-speed automatic and a ZF shifter that springs back into a neutral position after shifting.

Many customers have complained about the feel and operation of this shifter (including some in the forums), but the recall is only designed to stop people from leave their car in gear or Neutral when it is running, by intent, forgetfulness, or because they only thought they had gone into Park.

Sergio Marchionne said FCA will update the software so the transmission would go into Park when the driver’s door was opened. He added, “I don’t ever remember a planetary transmission that automatically switched into Park … I used to have to open the door to back up the car, because I couldn’t see anything from a very cheap car that I used to drive when I was a young man.”

The recall will not change the behavior of the shifter. FCA US previously said it would “enhance the warnings and transmission-shift strategy.” The company dropped this shifter in 2015 on cars, and in 2016 on the Grand Cherokee.

WELL BACK TO TRYING TO RETROFIT THE 2016 SHIFTER !!

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

^ they better be prepared to either let me refuse the Recall or provide a way for me to open my door in reverse. I need it often as I need to back into my garage..door slightly open due to angle of driveway and a female that hogs the heck out of most the garage...sticking my head out the window doesn't work so I have to open the door... that or perhaps take out the side the car

When they sense that happening they'll at least be in the car to hit the brakes.

That's why my suggestion was, if you open the door while in gear, it will shift to park. At that point, you can override it by manually putting it in the gear desired while the door is open.

Further, if the vehicle is in motion (such as if you are in the process of reversing and open the door) it should also override the "auto-Park".

Having said that, isn't your situation exactly what the rear camera is designed to solve?

I might also suggest a pair of compact blind spot mirrors to stick on your side view mirrors. I put a set on mine and a wonderful world of side view visibility was opened up to me, including the ability to see if I'm centered between parking space lines and view curbs when parallel parking.

It was one of the earliest additions I made when I discovered how poor the side view mirrors were in comparison to my F-150. I tried the tilt feature and found it tilted them down so far, I couldn't see anything but the pavement. I disabled that immediately.

Ha, I thought I was alone in thinking that.

On the 2004 Tahoe I gave my daughter when I bought the Jeep, you could set the mirrors so that neither tilted down, just the passenger mirror tilted or both tilted. The tilt was perfect for viewing the rear wheel and back of the car and it was adjustable to a point. I set it to just tilt the passenger side since I have a stone wall which drops in height on that side of the driveway. It was also useful in parking to avoid going up on the curb. I miss that feature.
