Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

Fiat Chrysler recalls 1.1M cars, SUVs after 41 injuries Chrysler says it is recalling 1.1 million vehicles worldwide, including 811,586 midsize SUVs and full-size cars in the U.S., to try to alleviate confusion about when the vehicle's automatic transmission is in the "park" position, which has resulted in 41 injuries.

I did not think this would happen, what the fix will be?

It will probably be a software patch preventing reverse from operating with the drivers door open.

I hope not, I like to hang out the open door whilst reversing the caravan.

Boy, I'm glad I'm not an idiot and pay attention to what gear I'm in before hitting the gas or stepping out of my car.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

I'm wondering how many threads will be started on this recall.

All it means is that we all might get your shifter. I'm glad you like your '16, but I've been enjoying my '14 for 3 years. What have you had to suffer with while you waited for an idiot proof shifter? A Prius perhaps?

You won't get a new shifter... just a software fix.

I didn't "suffer" with my 14 and I'm not "suffering" with my 16.

I hate my shifter. Would much rather have the mechanical type where I don't have to look to see what gear I'm in every time I move it.

You'd like the new shifter in the 16's. It's not mechanical but it feels and shifts like one.

Maybe they will fix the recalled ones like that, I hope.

Re: Jeep recalling 1.1 million shifters

After looking a little further into it, I guess this is all they will do. I probably won't even have mine done. I might want to move the vehicle with the door open sometimes.

The company will enhance warning chimes and alter the shift strategy, meaning alert messages will be displayed in case the driver door is opened while the engine is running. With the door open, the transmission will prevent the car from moving even if Park is not selected.
