Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

I guess I don't understand this. You must have foot on brake to start and to shift from park to drive. I normally keep foot on brake from start to placing transmission in drive. So when does the jerk take place, when you release the brake while in drive?

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

The jerk takes place shortly after you start it. I usually put the parking brake on to stop the lunge. I took it into the dealer today to see if it was normal and they claim it is.

This just flat shouldn't happen. In some circumstances it could cause property or even personal damage. Car dealers' representatives are capable . . . Of saying almost anything. Regardless of whether it's "normal," it should not happen.

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

This happens to mine off and on. It is really interesting that this is happening to a drive train that has been around for 6+ years. It is interesting to see the car lunge forward if you start the car and then immediately take your foot off the brake. I sure wish someone had a clue as to what was causing this.

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

Don't waste your time taking your truck to the dealer, they are going to give you the run around, My truck been in and out the dealer 5 or 6 time and once over night for this issues, they can NOT find the problem, they keep telling me they made same "adjustments" (BULL SHIT) to the transmission but the problem continues...

Very Very Disappointed with this new 2011 WK2 truck, To bad I got rid of my 2001 Durango with no issues for 10 years for this, I can't wait to get rid of this piece of shit truck.

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

Well it isn't dangerous or affects the way it drives. It is just a little annoyance that shouldn't even happen in a car nowadays.

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

Based on all the reply's here it clearly seems to be something that is normal at this time. If its something in the design or programming there is nothing the dealer is going to be able to do about it. You could take it in fifty times. Another thing is it has nothing to do with the brakes or having your foot on or off the brake. I also wouldn't say that it lunges forward . Its a bump and it might move forward an inch . I will not even bring it up to the dealer unless a tsb comes out. The last thing I need is them trying to fix something there is no fix for and creating other problems.

The problem is there is a fix for it pending there are actual mechanics anymore. The real issue is we pay the same price for someone to read and follow a service manual and computer codes. Anyone can follow instructions but a true mechanic knows how to find and fix the problem. Dealers shouldn't require corporate to provide the solution.

No it isn't a big deal, but this isn't normal by all means.

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

If its a design or programming issue there is no mechanic that is going to be able to fix it. The only way it would be able to be corrected is for engineering to make the change and then put it out there. My guess is a tsb will be issued for this at some point and it will be a software revision.

My hemi does this as well. Didn't notice until after the most recent transmission tab was performed.

Re: Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

First safety
We all should be using the park brake(E Brake) every time we park. Then you will not notice the jerk.

Mine does this from new.

Start your car on a flat surface park brake off just touch the brake lite enough to start. It does not move forward, it is more a sensation of moving.
I tried it with tape on the ground and on my tyre no movement.

Or place the car in park no brakes and see if you can push it back and forth see how far it moves! this is as far as it will move on start-up.

All autos have a park interlock, but should not be the sole securing method when parking. Use your park brake.
