Just got my first jeep - 2 problems/questions

Hello Forum!

I just got my first jeep yesterday, and I love it.
I got a 2012 grand chrrokeelimited, all standard options plus tow.
It has the 430N RHB media center.

After driving it for two days, I've noticed a couple of things and wanted to get your opinion:

1) Driving at high speeds 35mph-70mph, I mostly notice this on the freeway...but there is an additional humming that kicks in. I can only equate it to the background noise of an airplane. The noise gets Higher (not louder) at higher speeds. It's present continuously and does no go away until I get off the highway. It's there regardless of acceleration, breaking or coasting. I had another person listen, and they definetly heard it as well. You definetly have to actively listen for it... I don't know what's causing it, or if I should be concerned.

2) My iPhone 4S works with Uconnect via Bluetooth for both phone calls and streaming music. But for some reason Siri will not work. It doesn't activate Bluetooth or listen when I hold down the iPhone home button. I've read other posts where people state it works just fine. The dealer was scratching his head when he tried to set it up for me. I've reset both uconnect an iPhone. Can someone confirm they can use Siri with their 430n RHB via Bluetooth?

Thanks for all your help!

Ali

Re: Just got my first jeep - 2 problems/questions

I have a 2011 overland V6 (3mos old) and have noticed this from day one at hwy speeds and haven't quite figured out what it is. I thought all along it was tire related, but not quite sure. It reminds me of a ringing tire sound similar to pavement changes or like when going over a bridge/overpasses on the interstate. It kind of resonates through the steering wheel. A few others have mentioned this as well but I haven't found the answer.

What wheels do you have..18 or 20"?

Ajs800, when you say ringing? What do you mean? This is more of a straining sound...

20" wheels here. Ringing probably isn't an accurate description. It's very similar to the sound one would typically hear with pavement changes at hwy speeds.

I thought this all along, but it comes and goes even when the pavement stays the same and regardless if foot is on the gas, coasting, or when placing it in "N", all at speeds above 60mph. It's very strange. I have not yet taken it to dealer to have it checked out, but I can almost guarantee they won't find anything and state it's "normal".

Re: Just got my first jeep - 2 problems/questions

After spending several hours researching this yesterday, I found some good information on both subjects:

1) This sound, a humming / drone sound, is present at high speeds, most people indicate between 50-65mph. It is present on all 2011-2012 Grand Cherokees with 4 wheel drive. It does not matter if it's V6 or V8, not does tire size matter... However there has been some indication that lowering tire pressure helps it a bit, but does not eliminate it. I've read blog after blog of people who have spent hundreds/thousands of dollars trying to resolve, to no avail. Chrysler is aware of the sound, but does not deem it "a problem". Users have reported taking brand new jeeps off the lot to test, and easily be able to reproduce the sound. Some people have said it reduces over time/miles drivin...

This is simply a summary of what I've read on this and other forums, Some people are pissed, others just annoyed.

2) Siri over Bluetooth has been disabled on all late model 2012 grand Cherokees (built after oct 2011) due to incompatibility issues stemming from some coding apple put in the way Siri activates and uconnect (starts and ends Bluetooth phone sessions). Apple and Chrysler are working to resolve. No additional info or timeline was available.

Re: Just got my first jeep - 2 problems/questions

This is pretty much what i discovered as well, but wasn't really ever sure if every complaint was for the same reason. I do know that I've seen many 2012 owners with it as well, so it's not just a an '11 issue. Your description pretty much matches what I hear/feel as well. DUring Hwy speeds, do you feel it resonates through the steering wheel some?

I am very OCD when it comes to rattles/cabin noises and think that the avg person wouldn't even care or notice it, but it is very annoying especially when under 60mph(at least in my case) it's an extremely quiet ride.

I still hear it when I throw it in "N" at hwy speeds and coast which makes me think it's drivtrain or tire related, but I really don't know.

Re: Just got my first jeep - 2 problems/questions

I'm sure it's the same thing. Others don't notice it unless I point it out. But I hear it loud and clear. Given that when it's not happening, it's so smooth and quiet, it definetly gets under my skin.

Ive only had it for 3 days and noticed it yesterday. I was scratching my head trying to figure out where it's coming from. I'll pay attention to the steering wheel to see if it's more pronounced and report back. Other than that I love my ride. I just hope this isn't a design flaw that will lead to catastrophic results 1 mile after my warranty expires...

I'm not great with the mechanics of cars, but given that it's present regardless of what I'm doing with the gas pedal, I ruled out the engine. Don't know everything about drivetrains but my gut was that there is some sort of resistance, unbalance there. Either that, or some resistance with tires, wheel well, or the likes... That's just what it feels like to me.
