Re: just had to be towed. words of warning

I am confused. In two places the manual prohibits dolly tows. In a third place (p.565) it says they are allowed. As long as all four wheels are off the ground I don't know why the Jeep would care whether a dolly or a flatbed was used.

Excerpts from Jeep Grand Cherokee Owners Manual 8th Edition:
Page 530 "DO NOT dolly tow any 4WD vehicle. Internal damage to the transmission or transfer case will occur if a dolly is used when recreational towing."
Page 563 Table shows "Wheel Lift or Dolly Tow" "Not Allowed" for 4WD models.
Page 565 "Four-Wheel Drive Models
"The manufacturer recommends towing with all wheels OFF the ground. Acceptable methods are to tow the vehicle on a flatbed or with one end of vehicle raised and the opposite end on a towing dolly."

They want either all or no wheels off the ground. Using a dolly for recreational towing usually has 2 wheels on the dolly and 2 on the ground. That's the same as a hook type tow truck, two wheels up and two down. Neither is acceptable.

The guy that came to tow mine was about to drive away. He saw it and mentioned towing it with dollies, but said he wouldn't do that because he didn't want to be responsible. Then I mentioned the release in the armrest. Once he read my owners manual, he was fine with towing it and pulled it up on to the flat bed.

You guys should go check out what BMW X3 owners with the 8 speed and xdrive have to do, the Jeep isn't easy but I believe they have it harder if needed a tow with the vehicle not turning on.

It is the same on my 2014. I found it while sitting in the car at the dealer and asked them what it was. They had no idea whatsoever and asked me to call them and tell them what it was if I ever found out. I did find out and it was in the manual which they looked through. I didn't bother to call them.

While looking into how to put a dead truck in neutral, I came upon this Youtube video that shows you step by step.

Yeah BMW's electronic shifter is pretty much the same way. I don't see Jeep going away from that any time soon.
