just had to be towed. words of warning

I have a 3 week old 2015 grand cherokee overland. I love the car, but yesterday it would not start. Everything else is working so its not the battery, it just wont start. I called AAA and when they got here they could not figure out how to get the car in neutral to tow. After the driver tried for 15 minutes to get in neutral I called the dealership. They were not sure either. One of the guys in service had to pull up the manual online and he told me there is a hidden latch in the drivers center console. A tray that you remove. We could not find any tray to remove. Finally the service guy who also did not know where it is had to go find a 2015 on the lot and find it himself. It is there, but there is no way any human could find it unless they knew specifically where it is. Yes it is in the console, but it is a cover in the back of the console that you have to remove. It is in the manual, but it is not really that clear. After you pry up the cover you have to insert something in to slide a lever and at the same time pull up on a cord with quite a bit of force to get the car in neutral. After that we finally got it towed to the dealership where it now sits while they figure out why it wont start. I told my sales guy that they should school new buyers on this. They had never had to have one towed before. This may or may not have been discussed here before but I recommend to anyone with newer grand cherokees to locate this device so you know what to do just in case because the tow truck drivers will not

Was power coming up? There's a neutral button on select terrain dial.

What good does that do you if the transmission is in park? That just puts the transfer case in neutral... Also those with QT1 don't have the selectable transfer case anyway

I'm curious to know where this is hidden if you could explain it to us it would help a lot. Any car with an electronic shifter will have the same issue my X5 is the same way with a neutral manual override hidden under the front cupholders

Isn't transfer case in neutral enough for towing?

Correct me if I'm wrong but flat-towing is performed with the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in Park. But I'm not sure the transfer case with shift to neutral without the jeep running.

Re: just had to be towed. words of warning

you will find most tow truck drivers would know this as apparently the jeep is the most towed vehicle being towed so my tow truck drivers tell me

Skunkd, you are going to have to locate this. I recommend for everyone to go locate it. If you ever need to be towed on a flat bed like I did today, this is the only way to do it. This ridiculous contraption is located under the drivers armrest. You have to lift the armrest and remove a plastic tray that is towards the back of the top of the storage comparement. You have to pull this cover off and walla, you will see what I am talking about. Then you have to unwind the tapelike string, find something to push this little lever to the side, then pull up on the string with enough force to put the car in neutral. I think it is insane, but if you dont know how to do it neither will the person who is towing you.

and just to confirm, mine is a 2015. I cannot vouch if it is this way in earlier grand cherokees

This wasn't an issue prior to MY14. 11-13 had standard non electric shifters so they actually probably have just as little clue as us... They had no idea where it was on my X5 either.

And the transmission has to be in neutral while shifting the transfer case.

1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop, with the engine
running.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL.
4. If vehicle is equipped with Quadra-Lift™ air suspension,
ensure the vehicle is set to Normal Ride Height.
5. Using a ballpoint pen or similar object, press and hold
the recessed transfer case NEUTRAL (N) button (located
by the selector switch) for four seconds. The
light behind the N symbol will blink, indicating shift
in progress. The light will stop blinking (stay on solid)
when the shift to NEUTRAL (N) is complete.A“FOUR
WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM IN NEUTRAL” message will
appear in the Driver Information Display (DID). Refer
to “Driver Information Display (DID)” in “Understanding
Your Instrument Panel” for further information.

Re: just had to be towed. words of warning

Actually I am going to keep venting, this has been a terrible day for me and my cherokee. Besides the fact that I had to have it towed and it is now sitting at the dealership, something happened to my uconnect apps. I have had them all set up and working for a few weeks now including pandora and the others. Now they are not working. When I try to log on with my iphone uconnect app, it says the account is not valid, so I went online to try to access my account and it also says it is not valid, so I called and spoke with uconnect tech support and they see my account but even they cannot access it. It is now under investigation. One of those days
