Key programming

Sorry for the cross post but no one in the compass forum seems to be able to help and we seem to do better here in the GC area.

So I inherited my sons compass when he decided to stop paying for it on a loan i consigned...

We have a 2011 Compass, my wife's purse was stolen and she had her key. Now whoever took the purse has the key and our address and her work address.

Question is can the car be reprogrammed so the key will no longer work? I'm ok with buying new keys.

Would it be better to change the locks and ignition?

My dealer has been little to no help.

Any suggestions?

I would re-key the compass and the house if it were me. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Key programming

House is done but even if I just rekey the compass the fob will still unlock and start it, even if it can't be driven, so it will never be secure.

I'm hoping to make it so the fob won't work at all.

The dealer should be able disable the fob at the same time. If I remember correctly you can essentially start from scratch and associate all present fobs, rendering the stolen one obsolete.

Re: Key programming

That would provide great piece of mind for us until we can sell it.

Hopefully our dealer will figure it out.

Re: Key programming

I would think it ought to be possible to kill the link to the old fobs and reprogram only ones you want to have active.

What do they do when someone trades a vehicle in but only has one of the keys? I would hope they wouldn't let the vehicle sit with the same code set and a key in the wild before selling it to someone else (or putting it out on the lot, for that matter).

Any system that requires a set of "handshaking" codes should be able to be reset and a new set of codes built. My last vehicle had an alarm system that let you do that yourself if it reported an extra fob had been programmed. You could kill them all and only program in the ones you wanted to authorize.

The old codes would be wiped and you would have to have physical access to the inside of the vehicle to program another remote.
