Keyless Ignition/Key Fob Question

So this morning my husband pulled my 2015 Summit out of the garage for me. He gets out with the car running, I get in, he walks back towards the house. Got message on dash that key fob had left the vehicle. Yelled for him to bring the key back, so crisis averted. But I was wondering, what would happen if I had driven off? Would the car keep running, just not be able to re-start?

Yes, unless they changed something for MY15.

Re: Keyless Ignition/Key Fob Question

Yes, it will still run and you can drive around until you run out of gas, practically speaking. (with the annoying chime bellowing, of course) But once you turn it off...you're stuck. You need a fob to restart. My fob is always attached to my belt loop...that's specifically not practical for everyone, but there is always a way to keep the key with you that works for you as an individual.

Re: Keyless Ignition/Key Fob Question

Thanks for the info everyone. Loving the keyless ignition, but still getting used to it. It took me a couple of weeks to stop digging in my purse for my key! Also nice that you can't lock your keys in the car (not that that has ever happened to me).

I feel like I read the other day that it is possible to lock your keys in your car. If you accidentally press the lock button on the inside while leaving the keys in the car. I am pretty sure the keys will be locked in.

This is not true. I some how left the keys in the front cup holder, got out the car, went into the store and when I came back my door was locked with the keys taunting me from the cup holder. To make it worse...they were right next to my cell phone which has the uconnect app on it so couldn't use that to unlock the car. Had to borrow a cell phone to call the girlfriend to come bring me the other set of keys. So it is possible. Somehow. someway. It can be done.

(for the record, I did not hit the door lock button to lock the door either. not sure if there is some sort of safe guard that if the car is off and the keys are in the SUV for X amount of time...lock SUV)

Re: Keyless Ignition/Key Fob Question

But all I have to do is touch the door handle to unlock the doors. Does that not work if the key fob is inside the vehicle or if the doors were locked from the button inside the door?

Did not seem to work for me. That how I found out that my keys were left in the car when I pulled on the handle and nothing happened. Now seeing how the cup holders are situated, I had keys in one and cellphone in other. I know for a fact that having key and phone in the same pocket the Cell phone will jam the fob (does the same thing on my Prius as well), i wonder if the same thing happened in the cup holder? But that does not explain how the doors locked automagically. I learned a LONG time ago that you NEVER hit the inside door lock button when exiting cars, it's side effects are Anger and Sadness (in that order ). I will try to reproduce it when I have some time on Sunday and report back, now I am curious.

Re: Keyless Ignition/Key Fob Question

You might be right about the cell phone and the fob, but I just attempted to lock the vehicle with the fob in the cupholder and it wouldn't do it. I also let it sit for a while to see if it would automatically lock and nothing happened. You might want to do some controlled testing and, if it does lock, take it to the dealer.

Thanks for checking, you just ruled out some of the easy stuff I will not have to try. I will try to reproduce the exact situation and report back.

Or it could be one of those quirky electronic bugs that happen now and again, but are almost impossible to duplicate when you are in a diagnostic situation. Good luck.
