Do you give them the key? or not? (since they can drive and park it without needing the key)
Ever since I've seen the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I have lost all desire to ever let a valet jockey my cars around.

I pull the spare key out of the fob and leave the fob with them. This leaves the spare and set of keys with me.

I always try to remember to give them the key. Normally I throw it in the cup holder. Around here, many many cars have keyless start/stop, so they valets usually know how it works.

I give them the key after removing and keeping the emergency key as my fear is that they will somehow lock the key in the car by hitting the door button. Same at full service car washes. Truth be told I choose the self park option at valet locations. I can't afford to go to the real fancy restaurants though as I just bought a $40,000 Jeep.

Re: Leave engine running and take the key

If I eventually have to use a valet I am going to keep the fob and leave the Jeep running. They can just shut it down after parking it. If they have to move it again, oh well. When I come out to pick up the vehicle I'll give them the fob. I really don't want those jockeys driving my Jeep anyway so I always try to self-park.

Keeping the slide-out key is a good alternative though.

AAAA, not to worry. We don't have too many real fancy restaurants.

May just be me, but that sounds like a good way to end up with some sort of damage or unhappy ending. YMMV.

Re: Leave engine running and take the key

They work for tips. They wouldn't want a damaged car and the owners of these establishments have to deal with many well-off customers. I'm sure they wouldn't tolerate damage on these vehicles.

That's for sure. At least in Albany you do not have to be too concerned about the "valet" taking your car and finding out once you are in the restaurant that they do not have valet service!

If my wife is being a PITA I'll sometimes "forget" to leave the fob in the car. Since the ding-in doesn't start for a good 5 seconds after you leave.. The secret is to walk briskly.
I just spit pizza up all over the laptop. That's too funny!!
