Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

So, you can't do a one time warranty transfer unless it is a 5,6 or 7 year plan..... Hmmmmmm. Sorta rules out a resale benefit....

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

Here's what the Chrysler website has to say about my service contract, straight from the source:

Expires on 2094-01-19 or 999999 miles
Start Date 2010-10-20

I'd say that will cover my lifetime, lol.

I totally agree. If you take this vehicle past about, say 150k, you should should be seeing the $1900 back multiple times IMO.

More people won't though, than will, which is how they'll pay for my repairs at 150k, lol.

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

Why wouldn't the lifetime warranty be transferable ONCE if you were within the 7/100,000 term and have it convert to a 7/100,000 at the time of transfer so you get the transferable rights as if a 7/100,000 was purchased but if you keep it beyond 7/100,000 there is no warranty left to transfer.... now that would make me interested in buying one.

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

What I will probably do, is just always keep this vehicle sitting there with the lifetime warranty. It can be a hunting lease beater once it's past it's prime and/or I'm ready to move to the new hotness JGC. It would be nice IMO, to have a nice offroad capable 10 year old vehicle sitting around with a bumper to bumper warranty.

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

....and of course one has to be confident that Chrysler or whatever org the warranties are under will be around.... There are lots of organizations that promise X but 7+ years is a long time to honor something... Sure the Jeep brand can be sold but that is no reason to expect the Chrysler warranties to endure separately. Just sayin' take that into the calc...

Yes, that's definitely something we all have to weigh ourselves. Personally I just didn't feel like $1900 was a huge gamble in this scenario. I mean, maybe I'm just used to the German cars, where $1900 won't hardly buy you a new clutch from the dealer. That just doesnt seem like much, when we start talking about transmission failures, all these electric window/sunroof/blower motors, alternator, wheel bearings, air suspension and on and on. I hope my Jeep is long term bullet proof, but realistically, I know better.

I guess this originally started when I was looking at these Jeeps and thinking, damn, this thing has a LOT going on, way more than any previous vehicle of mine.

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

$1900 doesn't go far in repairing ANY 2010+ vehicle.

A single HVAC system repair could exceed that.

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

Yes but......most major things go wrong in first 36 months if they are defective, not worn.

Insurance always costs more than the probable outlay, that's the nature of the product. They aren't in the business of losing money by selling warranties.

You have to add actual repair costs + claims administration + general administration + marketing + sales person's (large) commissions + parts & labor price increase factors + return on capital (profit) to get to the present dollar warranty price. If they don't factor in those costs, then the company will go out of business...BK.

Since insurance always costs more than the probably outlay (or the company goes BK and can't honor the insurance anyway), it really comes down to whether or not you can afford the $X repair or not...and if you have a car loan if you need to pay it off...for homeowners insurance most people can't afford the loss so it makes sense to pay more than the probable outlay to avoid financial ruin (even though it costs more).

There is also the factor that most people change their tastes/lifestyle in cars and get a different one within X years. That's why the lifetime would be more attractive if it allowed a one transfer as and conversion to a 7/100,000. Reminds me of roofing shingle warranty pitches (even though the shingles are about the same).....40 years but non-transferable...who lives in a home for 40 years? Hence, it really isn't a 40 year warranty in the real world. And the shingles don't really last 40 years anyway...did you keep your paperwork for 40 years and is the company still around to honor the claim? Like clothes, people's tastes change way before the clothes wears out (at least in the developed countries).

If you know you're going to keep the vehicle for a long time, then perhaps this insurance may be worth it to you...but life circumstances change....like life insurance if you die early it's worth it (well to the beneficiaries, not to you), if you live a long time it isn't...

The warranty also offers "peace of mind"....but that is a lottery mentality and based on emotions, not facts. Like the $1,000 deductible versus the $500 deductible on car insurance....is it really worth $150/year for $500 of insurance??? Of course not for most people.

Just some food for thought......

Re: "Lifetime" Extended Warranty"???

Well of course they think most people will trade/sell cars and barely get in to the life part of the lifetime, if at all. But if you know you'll keep the car (or have real plans to) then it can really work in your favor. Our Commander Limited has 130K miles on it and if I could have gotten this warranty on it (or knew I could) when we bought it in 2005 we would have. Outside of a wreck we knew we'd keep it. The reason I'm getting the warranty on my GC is that I expect it to replace that Commander in a couple years and go 200K or more.

I also think it's a good deal since they don't differentiate between suspensions on the GCs. First gen QL? Yeah..I'll take that warranty. Not to mention I expect to drive 30K miles per year if not more.
