Lift Gate Alignment

Whats up Guys... another question... My jeepīs lift gate is misaligned what I mean by that is that the left sides pops up a bit (you can see the difference in the taillights) while the right side closes flush... I want to make the left side flush as well...

Thanks!
JC

Re: Lift Gate Alignment

take it to the dealer, but more often than not they'll make it worse. i notice when i'm parked on an angle of any sort i can tell it takes a couple of tries to close/lock it.

Re: Lift Gate Alignment

Just had the same issue literally was at dealer yesterday and posted it in the exterior section, the dealer made it worst lol honestly either deal with it or bring it to a body shop you trust... I'm bringing it to a friend in the body shop buisness so hopefully I won't get charged to much.

Re: Lift Gate Alignment

Taking it to the dealer is out of the question... Two of my doors were out of alignment and I fixed it myself... but I cant find any adjustments that can be done to the liftgate... where are they??

Re: Lift Gate Alignment

I was cleaning the step pad on my 12 GC and noticed some white marks on the black plastic. After a little investigation I found out that the bottom of the liftgate was rubbing on the pad, my stone white paint is now on the step pad.

Thanks Milous for providing the adjustments PDF. Could you please confirm if liftgate left/right adjustments are possible? The note in the PDF suggests in/out and up/down only but there was reference of "left and right" in one of the headings though no instruction for this adjustment is shown.

The liftgate of our new MY14 Grand Cherokee we took delivery of 3 days ago is slightly too close to the left and we are nervous of asking the dealer to adjust it (and potentially make a mess of it) if this adjustment isn't possible.

Thanks!

Mine along with many 2014's have the misaligned liftgate. The liftgate on mine was extremely close on the left. My dealer sent it to a body shop (at Chryslers expense) and they adjusted it so there is a horizontal adjustment available. I just don't know if I would trust a dealer to do it since most of them don't have a clue how to make those adjustments.

No surprise but since my vehicle is nearly a year old, it still doesn't sound like JNAP corrected the misaligned liftgate problem at the plant. So those robots are still out of whack.

I echo your sentiments of distrust for the dealer! Hence my hesitation to ask them to fix it for fear of creating an actual problem trying to fix a cosmetic issue.

Regarding the horizontal adjustments I'm not sure if the fact a body shop has fixed yours is proof that there is an adjustment thru say, mounting holes larger than the bolt or slot holes?

Couldn't the body shop drill out the existing holes to make it work since they are very capable with this type of work?

Re: Lift Gate Alignment

They must be using the same darn robots on the Cherokee (KL). My Cherokee liftgate is not aligned correctly. Our WK2 was perfect.

Milous, is there a KL liftgate adjustment pdf available?

A couple of months on and my tailgate is still misaligned. Dealer doesn't know how to fix it and keeps saying it's within tolerance.

It's certainly adjustable. But most dealers don't have a clue how to do it. The inside upper panel needs to be removed to gain access to the bolts. Mine was corrected at a body shop at Chryslers expense, as it should be. Since its over a year later and they evidently still can't get it correct, I think its time Sergio give up some of his overpaid lucrative salary and have some new robots installed to align the liftgates correctly. Those same robots have probably been in JNAP since the first GC's rolled down the assembly line for the 1993 model year.
