Re: Liftgate DAMAGED when using remote

I've been trying to figure this out. I really don't think water or ice could have had anything to do with the damage. Before I left my garage I did have the glass part of the liftgate all the way open as I loaded a few things in the back. There wasn't any problem then, so the car wash wasn't the problem.
I wasn't parked by any trees, or under anything that could have dropped ontop of the Jeep. I took pictures as soon as it happened, I would have seen debris if it was lodged in between the Liftgate and the roof. Also I've never put anything ontop of my Jeep.

My Dad thinks the Liftgate wasn't installed correctly or was flawed. I tend to agree... I will always love Jeeps, but this is crazy. I can't wait for rental car hell! I wish Chrysler service was like BMW, because a courtesy Jeep would be appropriate. As of now they do not have a vehicle for me... Maybe someday.

Re: Liftgate DAMAGED when using remote

Is i possible that the dammage happend before the moment you witnessed the noise? The noise and the closing of the liftgate might be a result of the damage that was already done?

Is it possible that by accident you opened the liftgate in the garage? I had a Jeep patriot and it was well designed, if you open the liftgate it will be leveled, GC liftgate is rising higher than the rooftop which makes impossible for me to open the liftgate in the garage (possible before with the patriot). Now, you have to watch out because you can click the remote button when in your pocket ...

Remote in the pocket while sitting on the couch is a good theory! However my garage is deep enough to pull in well past the garage door, and the ceiling is very tall. I use the rear camera to make sure I park in the same spot everytime. I can easily open the liftgate in my garage. The few times that I have I swear I had my hand ready to stop just incase, but there is tons of room. I look stupid and parinoid standing there with my hand out. There is no way I opened it into something. Also when I left home this morning I had the Liftgate Glass open full while I loaded a few things in the back. There was no problem then.

Also I was standing right behind the liftgate when this happend. My Jeep was locked so I used the remote to open the back. I had a 2hr drive from home and then it was parked behind a private building with no trees nearby and nothing above the Jeep. No other vehicles or people would get close either. So unless something like a Crow dropping a Walnut on the roof and somehow it lodged perfectly in between the roof and the spoiler happend, I'm going with an installation error.

I read they had 70,000 WK2's ordered, so mistakes will happen. No biggie, IF THEY FIX IT RIGHT, AS PAINLESSLY AS POSSIBLE FOR ME

Re: Liftgate DAMAGED when using remote

sorry bro...not doubting you....BUT...that damage was not caused by the liftgate alone. Somehting was between the liftgate and the roof. You can see the long scratches and such. But the most telling is the deep round dent to the right of the antenna on the roof. Something was wedged there and even curled up the lip of the liftgate. Sorry.....but something was wedged between the two to cause that.

Yeah this situation sucks, because I know that is what the dealer will say or think. I'm pretty much obsessed with my Jeep and I'm sure I would notice a tiny leaf on top of it. My Jeep was parked a few steps below the building sidewalk. If there was a stick or something on the Jeep I think I would have seen it. Plus, no tree's, nothing above it while parked.. I was driving 80mph just minutes before parking..

For what it's worth those scratch marks are from the spoiler. The liftgate continued to open after the "buckling" started. It didn't go straight down like it should have. Also I "gently" tried to open the glass after this happened to see what the hell happened. I may have caused the scratches.. The big damage was already done.

O'well, this is what it must feel like to be blonde.. I swear I didn't do it! I swear I'm observant! I swear I didn't put anything on the Liftgate..lol

I hear ya Scottina! Especially if this was somebody else's Jeep. Thanks for the input!

OK I'm beating a dead horse.. I just added another picture that shows two round deep dents on both sides of the antenna. The other picture is an unintentional close up.

Is it possible something got into the spoiler and could not be seen from the outside? Could something get in their and move around and eventually get in the way?

Re: Liftgate DAMAGED when using remote

There is no way ice did that. It would have to be a block of ice the size of a golf ball or tennis ball to cause that kind of damage. It is possible the spoiler itself grabbed the edge of the roof and pulled it down causing the dent. I am still with others that it could have even been a berry, stick, or acorn that was lodged in the gap and caused the damage when opened. I would see what the dealer has to say about this.
