Liftgate off centre

I've owned the JGC for almost a year now. Just recently I've noticed the auto liftgate making metal on metal noise when it closes. There was only one obvious place the noise could come from, the latching mechanism. But what I've also noticed is that the whole liftgate is off centre, ie the gap on the right is much smaller than the gap on the left, perhaps a good 4mm difference. I've read about building quality issues on this forum, and I've noticed early on in owner ship that the front doors stick out slightly more than the rear doors. I've just learned to accept this, but this is the first time I've noticed the liftgate. I was driving around the shopping centre car park yesterday and just so happened to have parked next to another JGC. I took a quick look at IT's liftgate and noticed it was slightly off centre too, though not as severe.
I was just wondering, is this something that happens over time or is it a build quality issue.
IRT the latch, upon closer inspection I've noticed the latch doesn't move very freely, I think I'll have to grease it up a bit more.

Re: Liftgate off centre

It's a build quality problem. Has been since the 2014's started production in early 2013.
Some luck out and are aligned correctly, though they are the minority. My dealer had a body shop correct the misaligned liftgate on mine when it was new. Chrysler just isn't interested in having the robots that install the liftgates at the factory recalibrated. Guess I can't blame them when they are moving these things off the assembly line at the rate of 1 every 57 seconds. They certainly don't want to stop the line for quality control.

I agree it is a quality control issue. I refused a 2015 at delivery due the lift gate not being aligned and paint drips on the front of the hood. The dealership didn't sound confident they could align the lift gate without causing damage to the paint. I was able to find a different one that has less paint issues, but still some flaws.

Hmm... the car is due for another service soon. I'll bring it up with the service centre but I don't like my chances on getting them to fix it. Lesson learnt. Inspect thoroughly before taking ownership.

Re: Liftgate off centre

Mine is off though dealer was able to align it better than factory had it, so far no leaks and looking at other JGC it seems to be a common issue with the 2014 redesign. I really think JNAP needs a two week shutdown but when do you shutdown a plant that is shipping everything it's producing?
