Light Throttle Whistle / Whine - V6 / QuadraTrac I - With VIDEO

All - just curious if you all notice this noise when cruising at interstate speeds? It's not all that loud, but its like a dog whistle or something, and it grows annoying after a while.

I know Jimbo posted something about a whine that went away. I was hoping mine was going to do the same, but not yet (1300 miles). Dealer initially told me that they all have a little whine, but he hasn't actually heard this yet.

Do others w/ V6 hear this? Sounds almost like differential whine, but not sure. If you click on the image below, the video should start. Noise starts at about the 15 sec mark, my apologies for the music...

Still love the truck.

I had the same noise, but not nearly as loud. It occurred during light acceleration and on slight inclines at hwy speed. It went away at about 2500 miles. Hopefully, yours will too. :)

I have a 2012 Overland V6 and it doesn't ever make that high pitched whine - when I first got it I thought I was getting tire noise and vibration, but it was due to the road surface I was on.

Good luck in getting that tackled, sounds like your dealership is working with you though.

I have reported a similar post on Jeep Garage in the past. I couldn't describe the sound but it sounds exactly the same as your video. The difference with my "12 JGC Overland" is the sound appears while I am making a right hand curve going between 25 to 35 mph. It never appears any other time. In fact if I turn around and follow the same curve but turn left the sound does not appear. Thanks for posting this video.

Dealer thinks it is gear whine from transmission. They are looking into whether there are any engineering reports on this issue and we will go from there. Unfortunately, it didn't do it much or as loud on the ride-along, but they at least acknowledged the noise and the video. Their position is that some noise is normal, but if it as loud as the video, then that's probably more than normal (although not indicative of any sort of impending or likely failure). Sounds like they are willing to take the transmission apart if I want to push the issue... we'll see how it goes.

If it is from the transmission check the transmission temperature on the EVIC when the whine occurs. This will help with reproducing the whine if temperature dependent. Other causes could low power steering reservoir. Since it is colder the volume may be lower.

Exactly what's going on with mine. You can usually hear it when you step on the gas like driving around the parking lot...stop, go, stop, etc. Also at hwy speeds, it whines the first few secs when I speed up but goes away. I don't think it's as loud as yours since I can't hear it from the passenger's side with my wife driving.

I'm in a '12 with the V8, but I only get it on throttle lift, at just about any speed. Let it keep slowing and it goes away. Hit the gas and it goes away. I can pretty much recreate it at will.
Pushing 4500 miles now, and it's still there, was hoping it would go away as it broke in. Odd thing is it sounds like it's coming from ahead of the Passenger side somewhere, but noises like that are deceptive to pinpoint. I was thinking PCV or vacuum line somewhere.
Will bring it up to dealer when I get a chance to take it in, which I haven't had yet.

I failed to mention after reading a couple of threads regarding transfer case issues I noticed the sound appears while driving in "Auto" mode. When I switched to "Sport" mode the sound never appears regardless of how many times I take a slow right hand curve. Once I switch back to "auto" mode the sound comes back.

Palmetto,

I have the exact same sound at 65 when going off throttle and only in auto mode, not in sport. I have QuadraTrac II. I'm now at 1250 miles and over time, the sound seems to have gotten fainter and shorter in duration, but it's still there. I've thought of taking it in as well and don't like the idea of taking the transmission apart.

Does anyone have connections to the factory? Let us know what you come up with!

Thanks.

I was driving around last night and didn't hear the whine at hwy speeds but it's still there when i'm driving around the parking lot or coming to stop or just after moving from a stop.

Palmetto - maybe my issue is different than yours after all. Mine sounds electrical than mechanical as if the sound is emanating from the tweeter by the side mirror. It's really f#$(*#-ing annoying.

2012 3.6L overland with tow. I absolutly did not and do not have that whine.
I just rolled over to 1900 miles today.

I've got a odd crunching sound when I tap on the brakes can't reproduce it yet. spending some early am time in the parking lot tomorrow.

Curious about this too....

I have V6 QTII and I get a whine similar to yours at light throttle tip in. Have asked the dealer to check it out on my previous two visits. I always come back to find the "could not replicate..."

Anyway, I have slightly over 16,000 miles and I have noticed this since probably the first month. My whine is not as loud or pronounced as yours however.

I think it has to do with the transmission. I can get mine to whine for about 1 second when shifting from N to D while idling at a standstill.
Give it a try and see if that happens with yours as well.

I also have whining noise comin from the front end It seems I can only hear it when I hit speeds over 60 mph. I went to one dealer today and he said its normal and didn't even bother checking anything else. Anyone get there's fixed yet cause I have another appOintment with a different dealership tomorrow

I haven't really had any contact with the dealer since the last time. I've been pretty tied up since then, but I will say that I don't notice it anymore. That may just be because I haven't taken a trip since then and perhaps my commute isn't long enough (25 - 35 min).

I'm coming up on my first oil change and plan to bring the issue up then.
