Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

Here's the scenario:
-Fob one sitting on top of shifter gate
-Fob two in luggage in a loose pocket (zero possibility of the lock button being inadvertently pressed) in the back of Jeep
-Doors are unlocked and the hatch is open
-Passenger door wide open
-I am changing from pants into short at the passenger door
-Shorts on...toss pants onto passenger side floor
-Shut passenger door
-Walk around back of Jeep....push button in back of Jeep to close hatch....it commences closing
-Snap on shorts comes undone.......pause to do up snap....successfully do up snap
-As I reach for driver's door handle, the hatch is just at the point where it is 'sucking itself shut'....CLICK....the doors lock!! I did NOT get my hand to the handle.

When Roadside Assistance opened the Jeep......I confirmed that BOTH fobs were NOT in a position that they could have been touched by closing a door or the hatch.

My dealer says this can't happen!

I guess I should NOT have put off getting a key cut and hidden!

Phone was in Jeep....luckily was only about 1 km from a phone.

Certainly could have sucked way worse had I been in the middle of nowhere!

Or the help could have arrived whilst you were minus pants, pre-shorts.

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

The pants distracted me from the story, why didn't you have pants on or were changing?

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

Again today...parked....sunroof open and driver's window down....fob in cup holder.....un-locked as I looked back...

Did a few things in the garage...saw spare fob on hook in garage....went out to get sandpaper I had gotten from Home Depot....Jeep was locked.

I now have a key ty-wrapped and caulked under the Jeep.

Now the NAV is reverting back to Saskatchewan instead of Washington even after setting it to BC four or 5 times.

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

Before caulking a key under the Jeep, I probably would have bought a pair of pants with pockets and stopped leaving the fob in the car.

But that's just me.

True Words of Wisdom!

OP... sounds like you might have some kind of electrical gremlin, since the Jeep Grand Cherokee Does Not Auto Lock itself. At least the U.S. Versions doesn't have that feature. It remains unlocked unless manually locked via either a key fob or the driver's side exterior door button.

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

Have had that happen a few times over the past 2 years. Leave fob in Jeep... lock doors... horn doesn't sound. Luckily when I first bought it I made a spare accessory key and put it in my wallet like I've did with all of my vehicles over the past 30 years. Cheap insurance.

It happens. Very rare... but it happens.

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

I locked myself out the other day.
I remote started the jeep in garage. Went down stairs and opened only the rear lift gate. I put my bag in the rear with the key and as I went to tie my boots I closed the gate and everything locked. Luckily I was home and it wasn't a big deal.

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

I never thought it was possible to lock your keys in the car because I forgot my keys numerous times and it wouldn't allow me to lock the door. I would think though if I'm ever locked out I'll probably use the uconnect app. A month worth of service for under $20 is better than waiting 1 1/2 for roadside assistance.

Re: Locked out! Not possible? Yeah, right!

I can't see the year of the Jeep on the mobile app, but:

The door handles act to unlock the Jeep once you touch the inner part. I assume this isn't in the earlier models then.

Also the lift gate has its own lock/unlock button just to the right of the handle. If the Jeep locks, you can unlock the vehicle via that button.

I had an issue with my Dodge remote. It would start on its own. I took it apart, used compressed air all over the circuit board and after putting it back together it solved my issue.

Worth trying out.

I did that, but luckily left my sunroof open.

I took my shoes and belt off.

Climbed in like Santa Clause.
