I'll just cut to the chase...my 2011 Overland wouldn't start, it took two weeks at the dealer for them to figure out it was the TIPM (totally integrated power module). It was replaced and issue was resolved. If you want the extended version, continue reading below...

My 2011 Overland wouldn't start one morning so I jumped it to get to the dealer. I am not very familiar with car problems so my inability to describe the issue well led them to believe it was an issue with the battery or a draw on the battery. Two days later, the saw no issue, charged the battery and returned the vehicle.

The next morning, it didn't start again. Jumped it to get to the dealer. They held it for 2 days and saw no issue. They flashed a TSB and returned the vehicle.

The next morning it did not start again. Jumped it a 3rd time, drove it to the dealer and said, I don't want it back until this is resolved. I get a call the next morning, they said the jeep started right up but had a very long crank. I said that was exactly what was happening. That afternoon, they called again and said they are ordering a new fuel pump and it would take 2 days to receive.

Two days later, fuel pump arrives and get another call. Was told they no longer think the fuel pump was the issue. A 3rd mechanic had suggested that the TIPM be replaced however this part was 5 days on backorder.

Five days later, the TIPM was replaced and the issue is resolved. Thanks to Allen Samuels Jeep in Katy TX for thier diligence.

I am having the exact same issue with my 2011. Long crank, usually it starts but a few times it didn't until the 2nd try. What is the TIPM? Never mind a little research has uncovered another can of worms for this vehicle. Just had my heads replaced at 37,000 and now with 38,500 I am possibly looking at a $600 out of pocket repair for a known problem.

My 2011 overland is standing with the same problem. The drain on the battery is the fuel pump that does not turn off. We were out camping and the vehicle standing close to us and I could here the pump running. This was an intermittent fault so it was difficulty to trace. Back order on system is 5 weeks. :(
This is a known problem but I have to pay for it as the vehicle is out of warranty. 115000km

Crazy problem, and not a cheap fix. Sorry to hear about it. Things like this have convinced me to get the Chrysler MaxCare Lifetime service contract with my new Overland. Still, 5 weeks for the part? That sucks!

OK, so what I don't understand is in my case an the OP's, we have a hard start/long crank. I used to be a Ford tech and the first thing I would check for is fuel pressure bleed off. Does Chrysler vehicles bleed the pressure off automatically and then prime the system before starting? That seems odd, but may very well be the case. My concern is: Is this common and does it leave people stranded or does the vehicle just die while driving? I love advancement and technology, but really? The Power distribution box needed a complex circuit board to control headlights, wipers, fuel pump etc..?

On a GM car first you check for a drain. If the fuel pump it is usually a stuck relay. $10 item/5 minute fix. Fuel pump is designed to give a two second shot when you turn the key on then interlock with the oil pressure switch.

The ECU/PCM is one of the most reliable components and most of my GM cars are between 20 and 40 years old (heck, that applies to everything here except son's car and the heep).

ps since I have a Pentastar, I bought the lifetime "Added Care Plus". It covers the powertrain and entertainment systems (and a lot more)but figure I can fix most of the lightbulbs for under $100.

Hi all, I just wanted to add that my 2012 Laredo has been doing a similar thing intermittently over the past few months. It would always start up, but then after about 3-5 seconds the engine would just shutoff. If I were to immediately try it again, it would run the starter until I cancel start up (like a no fuel condition). After waiting for a minute afterwards, it would always fire up like there was never a problem. My first thought was that it was a fuel pressure problem, but I have not done any diagnostic besides check fuses and relays. I have not brought it into the dealer yet, because I cannot replicate the problem. It seems to be almost completely random, and over the past few months I have not been able to correlate the fail to start to any condition.

Mine is fixed....kinda. Since my last post I decided to check connectors, fuses etc. and all looked good. While looking for the repair order (for the cylinder heads being replaced) in the center console I noticed my wife had a phone charger plugged in the 12v "hot" port. I thought on a whim that maybe as crazy and sensitive these electronics are that it was interfering with the TIPM or remote etc. I also asked my wife how long the starting problem was happening and it corresponded with the timing on when she plugged the charger in to charge something. Long shot? Yes, but out of warranty by 3,000 miles I decided to unplug it. The Jeep has started normal with the remote ever since and there were some very cold mornings. I did not plug the charger back in for fear of toasting a circuit the TIPM etc. , but it went from every day long crank/no start to starting normal for about 1-1/2 months. I suspect my battery itself has a bad cell and the charger's small draw was effecting it, even tho it appeared to crank normal. Anyhow just wanted to put it out there to anyone having this starting issue, check to see if you are using the 12v "hot at all times" port in the console. Maybe it's related? If not I found a big coincidence on my wife's.......

Bingo... that help.. its just an problem due to using charger plugged in 12v cigarette lighter port it's interfaring with TIPM... I Unplugged it and my Grand Cherokee back to normal.... guys.. check the same before trying fuel pump.. TIPM.. Crank position sensor an other thing.. Good luck :)

Posted a bit on the no start button but will expand a little here. Most modern chargers particularly those for telephones use a nano switching power supply to change the 12v to ac then back to a different (often 5v) voltage. If the switching frequency can feed back to the PCM then there are a number of sensors that can become confused.

I just got the news today that my 2011 Grand Cherokee needs a new TIPM. I had the same damn problems the others had on here - a long crank, multiple attempts to start and sometimes right after turning over the engine died. I took it to the Jeep dealership and they diagnosed the TIPM being the problem instantly.

So here is the bottom line:

I have the MaxCare warranty, which I paid $3k for. It will be covered, BUT....
they say there is a 6 to 8 WEEK BACKORDER. WTF am I supposed to do for the next two months? I could get stranded at any time. I think Chrysler should pay for my rental car. Has anyone else been in this situation?

That's what the dealer told me. He had just gotten off the phone with Chrysler. He said they were having a problem with the distributor and the backorder is nationwide. They told me that for a problem like this, if they had the part at a different dealership, they would give me a loaner/rental, but since the part won't be available for so long, they just had to send me on my way in my Jeep and a "good luck, call us if you get stranded and we'll send a tow truck". I said what then? He didn't have an answer other than to try calling Chrysler to see if they can do something.

Need a TIPM!!! 2011 Overland v6, extended crank when cold, ran fine once started. Brought to Jeep, tech told me it needed fuel pump. Waited a week for pump (driving it in the meantime/problem got worse) finally brought to Jeep and said its so bad I have to leave it. Service tells me the pump is in, wait 2 days for them to replace pump. They call and say now its your TIPM, need a week to get it. Waiting now and calling around to find out the whole world is out of stock.. What is this a 1967 Ferrari part????????? Seriously, looks like 6 weeks with my Kia Soul rental!!!!!

Contacted Chrysler Aug.19 ,was given a case manager, ( didn't need a case manager) just need to now when the tipm was going to be available. Was told that the parts would be shipped to Chrysler until Sept 23 .so who knows when they will arrive to the dealers. My wk2 hemi will be down for over 2 months waiting on parts .was given a rental but no hitch ,( we boat some , have a few rental houses that I need to use a small utility trailer for lawn mowing and materials for repair) this is why I always buy trailer towing PAC. This is getting ridiculous .

I have been in the same boat since July.. Shows all the symptoms described. Not starting.. rough start, pump running after truck being off for 6 hours and draining the battery. They said the battery was shot along with the TIMP module. Module was covered under my extended warranty but battery was not. They would gladly sell me a battery for $$475.00 (so expensive because of Gel composition fume less) I found it for $195.00 (same original battery). They also told me that if I used anything other than the original mopar battery it would void my extended warranty plan.

TIPM was supposed to be released by chrysler on Aug 12, then Aug 22, then Aug 29, Then Sept 26, then Sept 12th and this morning I called and now they say there is no date in sight because it is a vendor problem.. They are covering my rental because it was part of my extended service plan. I WAN
MY TRUCK BACK. I am now asking them to take a part off a new GC to make mine operational...

We'll see how it goes.. just wanted to share with everyone here.. (my first post)

my small contribution to this F..... problem!

My WK2 5.7L 2012 limited and my customer´s WK2 5.7L 2011 limited BOTH HAVE NO START - LONG CRANK - STALL AFTER START UP conditions

Diagnostic: TIPM IS DAMAGED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND REPROGRAMMED...

10-15 day delivery - MOPAR-DEALER needs the damaged part in order to supply the "new" unprogramed part

chief mechanic just inforfmed of a ¨campaign¨ issued by Chsysler-Jeep to install a seconday relay control for the fuel pump activation-deactivation

is anyone informed - aware of this potential solution

not sure to go with solution alternative leaving the original tipm and going the secondary relay ????:(

Experienced a similar issue. Leaving metlife stadium (JETlife Stadium) this passed sunday came out to my Jeep and nothing. Fob didn't work nor manually using the key. Assumed at first it was the battery. Got a jump from a neighboring vehicle with no luck. Long story short had to have my Jeep towed from NJ to NY to bring it to my mechanic (not a fan of the stealership). My mechanic told me the same as everyone else that the TIPM went bad and it is a know issue with Jeeps 2011-2013. The bad news was the part is backordered and there is a 150 day wait period (what Chrysler isn't telling anyone on a wait list is that once the part becomes available there is some crazy wait period after that)

In doing my own research I found a few companies that can rebuild the TIPM only leaving the vehicle out of commission for about a week.

I have an extreme amount of confidence in my mechanic who offered to rebuild the unit on his own to see if it would work. I WOULD NOT RECCOMEND JUST ANY MECHANIC TO DO THIS WITHOUT HAVING A CHRYSLER BACKROUND.

SUCCESS!!!!! Dropped my jeep off on Sunday night and picked it up this morning with the rebuilt TIPM. Runs fine with no signs of the issue.

My mechanic cannot guarantee that this wont happen again but for now my Jeep works until a replacement becomes available (I am still on the waiting list)

For those of you having this issue feel free to PM me for more info.

Good luck to all and I hope for this to be resolved for everyone sooner rather than later.

PS - I work in the aftermarket auto industry and from I know of in the northeast there are over 150+ Jeeps down with this issue. Chrysler MUST do something about this fast and it should be considered a recall.

One more thing to call out someone above mentioned Allen Samuels out in TX. I personally do a ton of business with them and they are absolutely awesome Kudos to them for getting some credit here.

I have a 2011 cherokee with the same issues of a bad TIPIM (not always starting, fuel pump constantly running). My dealership said the fix is to bypass the relay for the fuel pump which is built into the TIPIM. Basically install a secondary relay like the previous poster mentioned. I'm going to do this next week, since I have to because TIPIMs are not available at the moment. Meanwhile I just pull the fuse to stop the fuel pump when I hear it running.

But this is a lot less expensive and they said this is Chrysler-Jeeps fix for the problem. Theoretically it should work, since all your doing is bypassing a faulty relay to an externally installed one outside the TIPIM.

We'll see!

Dan
