You have to remember that repairs at any one visit must be less than the value of the vehicle. Once the car gets around 12 years old, most covered repairs are likely to cost more than the car is worth. Basically, Lifetime equates to about 10 to 12 years. However, the unlimited mileage is appealing for people who drive a lot.

Exactly my case...at one year and three months I'm at 24K miles due to a lot of highway travel. At this rate, I would run out of "miles" long before I would run out of "years". Hence, I opted for the lifetime service contract.

I am almost in the same boat as Jim, 1.5 years and right at 23K miles... got the lifetime 100 also. Put 230K miles in my last SUV.

Not sure I could agree that "most covered repairs" would cost more than the car is worth when the contract covers everything except maintenance items. A very major repair maybe. A well maintained veh of 10-12 yrs old is still worth several thousand dollars.

It bears repeating, lest it get lost in the discussion, that the unlimited/unlimited plans are NOT transferable unless you purchase in NC or FL. Caveat emptor and all that.

Re: Looking for recomendations for Extended Warranties

I'm really not worried about the transfer thing, torifile. I bought the extended service contract for "me", not the next owner. One major repair and it's paid for itself and with so much technology on these things, there is always a real possibility that the contract may come in handy "just because". I consider my $2180 for the lifetime contract to be a good investment in that respect, not even considering the rental/loaner benefit that sweetens the deal on these contracts.

His point is it's not really "Lifetime" in practice. Eventually you'll have a repair that is higher value than the vehicle. And guess who decides on what the value is?

Put you're own number on it. Maybe it's 14 years for you. Depends on how many miles you drive.

I had 225K after 10 years on my 2002 GC and I sold it for $2500 and it needed $1500 heater core (requires removing the whole dashboard). And some suspension member in the back that I had replaced earlier for $1500.00 So it was getting close to "Totaled".

I get that and I did the same for me. But I just didn't want it to be forgotten in case that is a deciding factor between the longest non-unlimited plan and the unlimited for someone. I know it was for me.

Re: Looking for recomendations for Extended Warranties

The added care plus was the right one for me and since I have been known to keep cars for decades "lifetime" was not much more than the 7 year. Besides am in sight of retirement & I can afford it now.

Also as mentioned, in Florida it can be transferred.
