Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Ok so I'm long overdue to update this thread from my original post. The 2 fixes are tested and confirmed. Depending on your specific smoking conditions you have 2 possible solutions.

1. Updated PCV - The newer version has more hard plastic instead of the softer rubber(about an inch). In some scenerios the soft rubber was getting hot and collapsing on itself causing positive pressure resulting in blow by.

2. For those of you smoking on startup and on inclines more than likely you will need the updated windage tray. Good news is its going into production... bad news is its not available yet.

It would take me a decade to type out the exact issue, but the short answer is the windage tray angle had to be increased to provide better drainage from the rear of the engine. The good news is that other than some smoking this doesn't cause any problems or damage to the engine or exhaust system. Though, I know its annoying, try to stay patient the solution is inbound.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for taking the time to update. I'm going to print this out and keep it handy. Hopefully I can get mine fixed properly at some point.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Major
Hiii guys.... it seems everyone is having the same problem.. I have this problem since I bought my 5.7 grand 2012. I went many times to the dealer and it seems they donít know the problem. This smoke does not come only when you start the car, you can drive the car for 1h then park it in a slight incline with the front up wait for 10m and push into the gas... you will see a big cloud coming from ur pipes.
After showing them the problem they said we will change the pcv valve, after they finish the work I took them for a test drive and when we came back the problem was still there. They were about to cry coz I proved them that they donít know what they are doing. A super technician is coming to my country from factory to see the car on Monday and I hope he can come up with a good answer.
Btw I saw a guy in YouTube with the same problem.. see the link below.
I will keep you updated if I find a good answer.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Windage tray (and revised oil pan for 5.7L) will be released in 1st quarter 2013.

On 5.7L models, the blue smoke issue is more prevalent when vehicle is parked with front of vehicle at a 15 degree or more nose up altitude (oil splashing issue).

Check/clean PCV valve O-rings (upper and lower). If in good shape PCV valve may not need to be replaced.

Available now, the new part #'s for the PCV valves are:

53032940AB 5.7L $35.35 MSRP
05038532AA 6.4L $40.05 MSRP

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I just purchased a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the hemi and mine started smoking as well at start up. Took to the dealer and they put a new pcv valve in it. They told me that the engineers are working on the problem but the fix won't be available until Feb. 2013. Basically I park my Jeep with the front pointing up in my driveway. From my understanding when talking to a mechanic which use to build motors for Roush is that the oil is getting on the back two cylinders. There are no drain holes at the back of the heads. So oil is getting in the cylinders somehow, His thinking is that the oil seals are letting a drip or two of oil on top of the cylinders and when its started that it is causing it to smoke. But he was told by the engineers that there is a splash pan? inside the oil pan that is causing oil to be slushed up in the cylinders but I think that is not right but I am no mechanic. I think that the oil is getting past the oil seals in the back two cylinders because it is parked on an incline with the oil in the rear of the heads without draining. He also mentioned that the engine itself is tilted to the back and the oil is staying in the back of the cylinders. Anyone out there with the same problem? The fix now is to pull the engine for this repair and I just don't want to go there. I would welcome this fix or be called by an engineer for this problem. Thanks GREG. 423-968-3995.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

So how can the windage tray be the culprit. Oil would have to get past the rings to make it smoke or am I missing something? Explain!! Any engineers out there to explain?

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Not an engineer but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Perhaps the oil doesn't get past the rings until the start up oil splash/slosh after the engine has set for awhile. It does not effect normal operation as there is less oil in the pan. A change in the tray could reduce the amount of start up splash and therefore the chance of oil getting by the rings.

I dunno, this possibility could be just BS....

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Jahkneefive,

Thanks for the update.

My own update:
I originally posted (#152 on 10-18-2012 - summary of possible causes). I now have 5,500 miles on my 2013 5.7 and the problem persists. I still get blue smoke on start-up when parked on an incline, nose-up.

Why is this information useful? If your dealer says "its normal just let it break in..." you can call BS on them. It won't go away and, according to Jahkneefive, there are now two hard part fixes to correct the problem. I will be taking the my jeep into the dealer I purchased it from for the first dealer oil change soon and report the problem. Hopefully they will correct the problem.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Just got my JGC out of the shop for a check engine light and oil change. They told me that the oil pan and windage tray are the fix for the start up smoke and PCV oil blow by. The parts are not available yet. They expect them within the next month. Hopefully this will soon be behind me.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Dealer called me yesterday and said the oil pan and windage tray will be in within two weeks. He said the parts are made and are being shipped out starting next week.

Sigma, I believe this issue is only for the hemi. Maybe check with your dealer to see if it has another issue which is causing the smoke on the V6.
