it would be interesting if you could get a photo of the new parts and a photo of the old parts so we could see the differences.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Just got a call from my dealers service manager. He says that Chrysler now wants to do a compression test to see if I'm within spec. If not then they want to start tearing the engine apart to look for broken rings. If the compression test passes then they want to remove the intake manifold to check for bad gaskets. If all this passes as OK then they will go with the oil pan and windage tray replacement. It goes in the shop next Tuesday. I guess this is not as close to being resolved as I first thought.

Sounds like your jeep may be a guinea pig to determine if there are other issues causing the smoke...

Oh yay. I'll probably be getting this call next. Sounds like this repair is going to be a blast. Chrysler has been calling me at least twice a week to keep me updated on the status of the parts shipment (usually at 5 AM Alaska time), this morning they said that they were waiting on a "re-modeled" part, whatever that means. Thanks for keeping us posted peckmv.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Well it passed all the tests and they finally OK'd the oil pan and windage tray. They tell me it should be a couple of days. Finally!

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Windage tray and oil pan replaced on the 29th of March with new design. Dealer said we were the first to have the new tray and pan installed so they are very interested as to whether or not the problem is solved.

So far so good, haven't seen any signs of smoking but it was fairly intermittent so time will tell.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Had the oil pan and windage tray replaced and when I went to the store it smoked at start up. Called the service manager and he said to drive it for a couple of days to see if it continued.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I'm curios to this also, it will be cold outside and I'll be at a stop light and i'll be the one with exhaust shooting up onto my tailgate.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I don't see how the new pan will solve this. I doubt it's an issue unless the vehicle is parked on a massive incline. The oil would have to be high enough to surround a piston.
My Jeep stopped doing it at the 1st oil change when I installed the catch can. I park on the same incline driveway it was smoking at when I took it home from the dealer.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Well even after the oil pan was replaced it continues to smoke on startup. I contacted the service manager and he said he would contact Chrysler to see what they want to do next. The saga continues.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I just checked my catch can and at 2000 miles it had 1/2 inch of oil in it. While this is not much it is too much for a new gas engine. I think they have an issue with where it is sucking fumes from in the engine.
