Hemis are notorious for this.

I would bet this is the cause of smoke at startup. It must be pooling somewhere in the intake when you park on an incline and then hits the combustion chamber when you start it up and it just burns it up causing the smoke.
Is this a issue even on the ram trucks?

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

One thing i noticed with catch cans is that if the manifold vacuum is strong enough, the catch can will let through some oil, at least that's my experience with the billet technology catch can on the crd engine. I had to modify the can to reduce the oil passing through.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Well here's the latest. The service manager called me and discussed what happened when they changed the oil pan and windage tray. The oil pan has a deeper sump and the oil now sits lower in the pan. When they filled the crankcase with oil the level was wrong on the dipstick because the oil level is lower with the new pan. So the tech added oil to bring it up to the full mark on the dipstick. I ended up with 8 1/2 quarts of oil. So they believe this was the cause of the smoke after the new pan was installed. They had me return to the dealer and they changed my oil again and only put in 7 quarts. The reading on the dipstick is below the "add" line. Time will be the answer to see if the smoke on startup stops. Meanwhile, the dealer is in contact with Chrysler to see what to do about the dipstick issue. Looks like they will have to come up with a new dipstick for the revised oil pan.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Wonder if they lengthened the oil pick-up to account for the added depth? Maybe not if they overlooked the need for a longer dipstick. My dealer wants the rig to run tests per Chrysler. Will mention the dipstick issue. Thanks.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I would hope they made the oil pickup longer to sit at the bottom of the oil pan. This will cause oil starving issue's with the engine running if the vehicle is on a steep incline, or even in hard cornering

There is no mention regarding the length of the oil pick-up in the above post, hence the concern. Sucking air = bad, oil = good. Worth asking about.

I have to apologize. I don't know what I read, but it wasn't what you wrote.

AKHLK is on a distinguished road
Well, I've been waiting to see what other people have experienced with the smoking issue/windage tray fix but so far peckmv's been the only one that's posted and it seems that there is problems with the dip stick length.

Chrysler has been calling me and reminding me to take it in to get the repair work done. I have been repeatedly asking chrysler and my local dealer about the deeper oil pan and possible too-short dipstick and FINALLY got an answer. Suzie, chrysler customer service agent, told me that the new oil pan IS deeper and there is NO new dipstick. She also said that they CANNOT promise me that if there is a problem with the oil reading after the new pan is installed that they will fix the dipstick. I explained to her that the vehicle might end up getting overfilled by a quart and a half of oil and she said that it wouldn't hurt it!?! She also said that if I wanted a longer dipstick I would have to see my dealer about getting one aftermarket.

What do you all think about this? Is this acceptable? Should I go ahead and get the work done and see what happens, even if it screws up my oil reading? Has anyone else had this fix done? Anyone??? Help me out here please.

AKHLK, its been about 2 weeks since I had the oil pan changed. After they put in the correct amount of oil it has NOT smoked (Hurray). The reading on the dipstick is about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch above the add line. This still puts it barely in the cross-hatched area. I still have not heard from Chrysler on what they are going to do about the dipstick. If I have to I will modify it myself. At least it stopped smoking.

I was blown away that the the customer service rep from Chrysler told you that putting in 1 1/2 quarts over is OK. Its NOT. Don't do it. I have not given up, and will keep hounding Chrysler to do the right thing and replace the dipstick with the correct length. Its their screw up and now they want to half ass it. Thats BS and I will fight it. I have been dealing with this for almost 2 years and I'll be damm if I'm going throw in the towel now. I'll keep you posted of any updates.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

unrelated to smoking Hemi's but my dealer told me not to fill up my CRD WK to the full line, because oil seals will leak, they said halfway between the fill line and full line.

I have not found any TSB that backs up their advice.

Perhaps if those guys that had smoking Hemi's siphoned out some oil, their Hemi's would stop smoking? Worth a try, pull out half a quart of oil and see if your engine stops smoking on an incline.
