Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I experienced the same thing once. Jeep on an incline in my driveway and running for a while. Got the smoke when I drove off. Im guessing the incline is causing the exhaust fumes to back up in the system and just come out in a larger amount at the initial take off.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Similiar thing happened on mine this weekend. Started jeep and backed it out of garage and into driveway in the morning and parked it. It sat about 8 hours at a very slight (10%) nose down angle. Upon start up 8 hours after parking lots of whitish smoke. Idle was smooth. About 2000 miles on our V-6. Having worked in service departments of dealership for over ten years I know that it's impossible to make it happen for the dealer. But always good to have it documented on a warranty repair order even if "no problem found" is the answer.

This one's easy. The exhaust drain's are at the rear of the mufflers as they usually angle down in the rear slightly. Starting it up to move it out onto the drive and parking it in on nose down angle allowed all the condensation from the exhaust, exaggerated by the short initial run time, to collect inside the exhaust. Starting it up heated the exhaust, turning the moisture to steam and hence the white smoke.

At least that's my long distance Internet diagnosis

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Mine did it on a gradual tail end decline and it looked like white thick smoke only at start up and then has never come back. The truck has 12k on the odometer when it happened and panicked like crazy as I have never seen it before. But about 1k kms ago I had the first oil change and went to synthetic oil from the dealer. Thank god I purschased the extended warranty from the dealer!

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Mine did this tonight. I got out of the car and forgot it running and went into the house. After about 1/2 hour noticed smoke out of the exhaust so took it for a drive to the corner store. Major smoke all the way there and smelt like burning oil. Woman at the store asked if it always did that. So left store and went for drive on the hyway and now is running nice and clean. Not sure what is going on there. 2011 overland with hemi.

Mine does the same thing, brand new 5.7 Overland Summit, now at 500 miles. Oil is filled to full level. My driveway is also on an incline, like yours, and seems this only happens when I am parked on that incline. I think oil is pooling in the heads and some is getting past the valve guides, but am not sure. I have seen this reported now on multple threads. Keeping an eye on oil consumptioin and these threads to see what develops. Some have reported that it lessens over time as the break in is completed. Break in can take up to 2 - 3 thousand miles, maybe more. Not a good sign...

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I wonder if oil from the PCV pools in a certain location of the intake manifold when the vehicle sits an angle and then when you first fire it up that oil ends up in the combustion chamber.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Did your dealers ever found the problem?

My 2011 with 3k miles has the se issue and the dealer can't find anything wrong. My friends say my Hemi is a two stroke lol

I'm getting tired of this engine being so unreliable.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I too have had this problem. The first 2012 JGC I bought had it happen with just 20 miles on it and I returned it to the dealer. They ordered me a new one and guess what, it does the same thing. Took it back to the dealer and they said "no problem found". The sales person suggested that I drive it for a few thousand miles to see if it gets worse or goes away. It does it when cold and also when driven for a while. The other day it did it after being turned off for only 5 minutes. Its not condensation either. This is a big cloud of bluish smoke that engulfs the entire vehicle. The common denominator is that every time it occurs I was parked on an incline with the front up. I called Jeep directly and they said that I was the only complaint and they were unaware of any oil burning issue. They told me to take it to the dealer. I told them I already did. They suggested a different dealer. I plan on waiting to see if it continues or goes away. Hopefully it gets worse so the dealer can't give me the routine "no problem found" response.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Exactly the same problem I have. Maybe we should replace the 5.7 hemi for a 6.2 L.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

The same as you, they told me to drive it more and wait if it gets worse.
Mine is a 2011 overland Hemi with 3100 miles.
