Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Get use to that love hate relationship.

Put a catch can on it. Since I put one on at about 2000 miles and 5000 miles since it has only happened one time. Not sure if this is what fixed it, but Chrysler has not clue on that will actually fix this issue.

Call into Chrysler and put in a Star case. 800-992-1997

By the way, they have never heard of this issue before.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

So we had the new oil pan and windage tray installed a few months ago and after a few weeks thought that it did the trick but about a week ago we noticed a cloud of smoke again. I went into the TSB section to see if a new TSB was finally out and lo and behold a new TSB is out. The TSB is 09-002-13 and was dated for October 09, 2013. I noticed that in addition to the oil pan change, their is a PCM update that was not out when we had the oil pan changed. This update incorporates a reduced vacuum feature that helps lessen the effect of oil pull over. This is kind of in line with what some users have been doing with drip cans and lager vacuum hoses. We plan to contact the dealer to have the update applied, hopefully this will finally put this issue to bed.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Took mine in today for the TSB for this issue as well as the rattling rear shocks. Let's see how they do. Don't think the new oil pan will help with the smoke issue, but you never know.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Please let us know if this fixes your issue. I am in the middle of a legal battle after 17 visits and just over 12,000 miles on my 2012 JGC Overland.

I have tons of short video clips showing the car smoking like crazy at start ups and when idling. Last visit the Chrysler Regional Tech put the note "Operating Normally" on his comments... Not sure whats normal but I have owned tons of vehicles and none smoke on start-up except this one... actually my new lawn mower doesn't even smoke on start-up.

Anyhow I digress... I do think the fit and feel of the JGC is fantastic. However the service issues and straight up avoidance of this smoking issue has spoiled the brand for me and any future purchases.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Per TSB 09-002-13 http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_0900213.pdf

If the customer describes the symptom/condition, perform the Repair Procedure.

If the dealership says "they cannot duplicate", tell them to RTF TSB.

I am headed in next Friday to have this completed. We'll see how that turns out.

The TSB says nothing about the amount of oil to add, so I am concluding that the amount stays the same per the manual. Which, since there is no updated dipstick, will read low (nice job Chrysler).

Wonder if the newer rigs are shipping with the new pan and a "new" dipstick? Since the TSB is only for vehicles built before 10/01/2013, suggesting a change. Suppose a quick check with parts should be able to answer that.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

They replaced the oil pan, PVC valve, flashed all the memory settings, replaced head gaskets and reground the heads to ensure they are level. Still smokes after better than 17 visits and with the first freeze in Washington DC a few weeks back the Front windshield leaked... ROFL. Chrysler has outsourced quality control and the product while sound in design is crap in execution. Chrysler has offered me via my legal team full MSRP of my 2012 towards a new vehicle. Problem is the exact same vehicle would be almost $5k more now then when I bought it in 2012. So on that note.. Chrysler can go F.... well you know. Legal team is informing them that we want a full refund and are not interested in a craptastic replacement at this point.

I am so damn disappointed with the conduct of Chrysler on this matter I could spit nails. The constant done by the manufacturer between initially stating I must work through "Impartial Services Group" who for the uninitiated is the face for Chrysler's delay team. Then regional techs state "normal operation" when the vehicle smokes right in front of them... Seriously? Anyone who has a Jeep and it smokes and the vehicle is still under warrantee... PLEASE DO NOT DO WHAT I DID AND WORK WITH THEM... Get a lawyer and open a lemon law case. 99% of lawfirms that work on these take the case without fee since it is worked into lemon law that the manufacturer must pay legal fees. With that said you get legal for free and your settlement is 100% yours. Chrysler gave me nothing but lip service till I retained legal council. I would save all of you that same pain and wasted manhours with countless hours of frustration.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I've had my 2011 WK2 for a year and it's been nothing but problems. I've put 30k miles on it. Going back to the dealer for the smoking TSB, as well as a persistent Evap leak error code. Ugh.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

My 2015 5.7 smokes on start ups and it burns a crap load of oil dip stick is always dry ... dealer claimed it was leakage and needed to change the oil pan which is BS.. no leaks in driveway or oil under vehicle... .. this thread is old ,and it seems that whatever the fixes are suppose to be, have never happened...

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I had startup smoke if parked on a hill facing uphill. There is a TSB for it which involves a new oil pan. I had that done and still had the problem. When checking the oil, it was always on "Add". It wasn't until I read about the dipstick change needed here on the forum (Needed a longer one). After changing the dipstick the problem went away.
Hopefully that is your problem as well.

Same here. I changed the oil pan and the dipstick. Neither cured it. The dealer tells me they've never seen it before ...

I always have a startup plume of white smoke when I parked facing uphill. It didn't seem to matter if it sat overnight or for only an hour. It always seemed worse when I'd been driving it hard just before I shut it down.

Other independent mechanics, i.e. non-dealer, tell me it's a Hemi. Get used to it. They all do it

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I have a new (516 miles) Jeep Grand Cherokee I drove it today, didn't see any smoke when I started it, but when I came home after driving it maybe 8 miles round trip, I was sitting in my parking space and saw a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I di not drive it over 40 mph. on the entire trip?
Any suggestions?
