Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Has anyone heard about the AOS ( air and oil separator ). In some cars it is plastic and it is located between the engine and the throttle body.

Maybe if that part fails it is letting the oil into the combustion chamber!?!?

What do you think?

My dealer knows nothing about the problem...

At least that's my long distance Internet diagnosis
^^^^^ I agree, unless you are 100% sure its oil smoke and not water vapor. If you truly believe its oil (I'm not doubting that it is) I would do these three things in order.

1) To hell with the dealer, a lot of the new mechanics can not diagnose a problem unless there scan tool tells them what it is.

2) See if it goes away after the rings are good a seated, 1000 miles minimum and I would go as far as saying 6000 miles.

3) If it still happens after 6000 miles I would install a catch can for no other reason than the air oil separator on these motors SUCK.

The AOS is notorious for blow by causing not only varnish build up on the intake, but pooling of oil due to low manifold vacuum at idle. I could further see this being exacerbated by the nose down situation. Thus, once you got on the gas the pooled oil would be sucked through the intake, burnt and show up as a puff of bluish white smoke. It doesn't take much oil to make smoke, so I could see this problem happening and there not being any discernible difference in the oil level.

That's my $0.02

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Throw this incline thing out the window. I live in south Florida which is flat as a pancake and have the same problem. This morning it has been the worst yet, big cloud of smoke for about 5-7 seconds. Has happened since day one and currently i have 2700 miles on her. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow and will post an update.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

not sure how this helps, but i test drove a GC hemi and when I used the remote to start it a large ploom of blue smoke came out also - i was like WTF?

it definitely wasn't very reassuring at all, saleman said it's because it's been sitting there for a few days...not sure if i believe that or not. i've had cars not driven for over a month and when started up, it never had those problems.

I would say BS to that salesman. I had 195000 miles on my 98 Tahoe and it never smoked...ever. I'm still getting the blue smoke from mine but Jeep and the dealer have no clue whats going on. Thinking about a extended warranty because I have a feeling that this is going to be an issue for some time.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Had this issue when jeep was new, did install catch can (but not b/c of this thread or as the solution to smoke). For what it's worth, my jeep had 7500 miles on it, I have a steep incline driveway and neighborhood, and I haven't seen it after 5000 miles, or when I considered the jeep to be broken in...dealers didn't care, I'm monitoring this thread and my jeep and will act accordingly...it was not vapor (white), it's bluish color and smells like oil...this may be the most relevant (and expensive for Chrysler) thread on this forum, I highly suggest we over communicate on this matter on this forum, thanks to all for sharing

I would be interested to know if you removed the catch can if the smoke returned?

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I noticed the blue smoke for the 1st time yesterday. I have an '11 GC 5.7L with 8,500 miles on the odometer. The only reason it caught my eye is because I was walking up behind it and used remote start. When I saw the blue smoke I was startled.
Who knows how long it has been doing this but from this moment forward I am going to be monitoring it.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Today I will take my overland for service for 6000 miles and to see if they are finally going to do something with the smoke issue.

They told me to drive it hard for 3000 miles to see if that makes any change lol, obviously did nothing to resolve the problem.

I'll keep you posted.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

what you are describing is leaking valve stem seals. If a car sits for a long period of time and the vavle stems seals are worn oil drips past them and into the combustion chamber. When you start up in the morning a quick cloud of blue smoke for just a second. It should not be happening on a new vehicle. Old Toyota's from the 90's with their 5SFE engine used to do this once they hit 100,000 miles.

Its not going to hurt anything and you dealer likely won't do anything for you. You can switch to a high mileage oil to swell up the seals and stop it, but its lame such a new car has this happening already. Sounds like a design flaw in the HEMI.

I'm interested in a Penstar V6, does it too have leaky valve stem seals?
